Lenten service

The next Lenten service will be on Wednesday, April 13 at Salem-St. Paul Lutheran Church in Kresgeville. Guest preacher will be Pastor Sharon Temple. Soup and sandwich hour will begin at 6:30 p.m. and the service will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Chestnut Ridge Seniors

The Chestnut Ridge Seniors will meet on Thursday, April 14 at 11 a.m. at the Kunkletown Volunteer Fire Co. Wear your Easter bonnet. There will be Easter eggs and cupcakes. Bring a bag lunch. They will be playing bingo.

Lions blood drive

The Western Pocono Lions Club blood drive held Thursday, March 31, netted 35 units of blood. The club thanks all who donated and encourages residents to give at other blood drives.

Historical society meeting

The Polk Township Historical Society will meet on Monday, April 4 at 7 p.m. at the Polk Township Municipal Building in Kresgeville.

The evening's program will be a presentation and discussion of the Polk High School Class of 1938.

This will be the first in a series of presentations they have planned regarding the early years of Polk High School.

Several members of the early classes are planning to attend and share their memories and experiences.

Future PASR president

Former Pleasant Valley High School principal Frederick Hackett, Brodheadsville, is the president-elect of the Monroe Chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR) for the 2011-2012 program year. Currently he is serving as program chair.

Two funerals

Effort UMC was the site for two funerals this past Friday. The first was for the Rev. Jack Rule, who served many area churches, including McMichaels and Effort UMC as well as Parryville UMC in Carbon County and Richmond UMC in Northampton County.

The guest preacher will be the Rev. Michael Eckroth.

Soup and sandwiches will be from 6:30-7:30 p.m.

St. Matthew's will provide the soup and beverages.

Bring your own sandwich.

The service will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Polk Elementary School will have a PTO Meeting on Thursday, March 24 at 4 p.m. Parents of Polk students are invited to come and share their ideas. Baby-sitting is available.

Meet Your Friends Night

Pleasant Valley Intermediate PTO will be having a sixth grade Meet Your Friends Night on Friday, March 25 from 3:45-6 p.m. Please make sure that you pick up your child promptly at 6 p.m.

Special speaker

Tammy Graeber recently spoke at Effort UMC about how her project, The Garden of Giving, came to be and what needs the outreach project has now, including board members, funds and other volunteers.

A PowerPoint presentation highlighted the happenings at the McMichaels garden last year, including volunteers at work planting and harvesting. Over 6,000 ears of corn were among the gifts to area food pantries and soup kitchens.
