The Chest Ridge Seniors will meet on Thursday, Jan. 24 at 11 a.m. at the Kunkletown Vol. Fire Co. Bring a bag lunch. They will be playing bingo.

Exercising seniors

There is a low-impact exercise class for those over 55 at the Kunkletown Vol. Fire Co. every Tuesday and Thursday from 9:30-10 a.m.

Pleasant Valley Elementary School will be hosting a winter carnival on Friday, Jan. 18 from 6-8 p.m. All students and their families are welcomed to attend.

Collecting stuffed animals

New or very gently used stuffed animals for children in emotional or traumatic situations for the SAFE program of PA are being collected at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church.

The next Eldred Township Historical Society meeting will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15 at the municipal building.

Pet rescue adoption day

Safe Haven will have many young dogs available for adoption on Sunday, Jan. 20 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at Tractor Supply on Route 209, Brodheadsville. A pre-adoption application with references and a home visit prior to adoption are required. Safe Haven Pet Rescue is a small group of dedicated volunteers from the West End of the Poconos who save highly adoptable dogs from high kill and overcrowded shelters and finds them loving homes. Shelter killing is the number one cause of dog deaths and Safe Haven has saved more than 700 lives so far.

Free clothing and food distribution

Hope Fellowship Mission of Seventh Day Adventists will have clothing and food for those in need. Hours will be on Saturday, Jan. 8, from 2:30-4:30 p.m., and Wednesday, Jan 26 from 10 a.m. until noon. The building is located one-half-mile past the Pleasant Valley Elementary and Pleasant Valley Intermediate schools on Polk Township Road. It is sponsored by the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Dog returned

Save-A-Dog already has good news to share in the New Year. A dog was found in the Effort area without identifying information on New Year's Day. Within two days it had been reunited with the owner.

The organization, a nonprofit 501(C)3 organization, headquartered in Brodheadsville, is thankful for the support given by area residents, whether time or treasure.

There will be a reorganizational meeting at the next Eldred Township supervisors meeting on Monday, Jan. 7 at 7:30 p.m. at the municipal building. This meeting, as is every supervisors' meeting, is open to the public.

Altar Guild members at Salem St. Paul Church are asked to sign up to serve on the guild for 2013. If possible please sign up for two months during the year. New members are needed and welcomed.

PVHS winners

Pleasant Valley FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) competitors did so well at the Region 21 FBLA Conference held at East Stroudsburg University in mid-December that 28 of the students who won are eligible to go on to the state FBLA competition.

St. Nick Project

Effort UMC's annual Christmas outreach, the St. Nick Project, begun years ago by the late Rev. Jerry Miller, touched the lives of at least 35 families in need, comprised of over 130 adults and children.
