Crime Watch

The Wednesday, Aug. 7 Crime Watch meeting at the Polk Township Municipal Building has been canceled. The next meeting will be at the township building on Wednesday, Nov. 6.

School supplies

Effort UMW is collecting school supplies to be given to current food pantry clients and church members who have a need for assistance. Sign-up for school supplies will be July 27, during food pantry hours.

The only distribution will be at the food pantry Saturday, Aug. 10.

Blood drives

Our Lady Queen of Peace, Gilbert, is hosting an American Red Cross blood drive on July 31, from 1-6 p.m. To set up an appointment call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Chestnut Ridge Seniors

There will be no meeting of the Chestnut Ridge Seniors on Thursday, July 25.

They will meet again on Thursday, Aug. 8 at the Kunkletown Vol. Fire Co. at 11 a.m.

Exercising seniors

There is a low-impact exercise class for those over 55 at the Kunkletown Volunteer Fire Company every Tuesday and Thursday from 9:30-10 a.m.

Salem St. Paul's

Each August Salem St. Paul's Lutheran Church operates a food stand at the West End Fair in Gilbert. It needs the support of all church members and friends to make this effort a success.

The work schedule for this year's fair stand is posted on the community bulletin board. Volunteers must be 13 years and older to work in the stand. If you are able to sign up for more than one shift, that would be great. Volunteers will receive a free fair entry ticket and a free meal for the day they are scheduled to work.

VBS under way

St. Peter UMC's Vacation Bible School is under way this week. Coming in August is the VBS at Effort UMC, from Aug. 5 -9, from 9 a.m. until noon. The theme is: Kingdom Rock.

Equilibrium guest

The Western Pocono Lions Club will host a representative from Equilibrium at its monthly dinner meeting tonight at The Old Mill Pizza on Route 209 in Sciota. The club gathers at 6:30 p.m.; the meeting begins at 7 p.m.

St. Matthew's UCC will hold its Vacation Bible School Monday, July 15-Friday, July 19 from 9-11:30 a.m.

Children from ages 3 and up are invited to join them for a week of learning Bible stories, songs, play games and make interesting crafts with the theme of Athens: Paul's Dangerous Journey to Share the Truth.

If anyone would like to donate healthy snacks for refreshments, please drop off at the church Sunday morning or Monday morning.

Salem UCC July events

The Community Breakfast at Salem UCC in Gilbert is Saturday, July 13 from 8:30-11 a.m. The menu includes: eggs, bacon, sausage, home fries, pancakes, juice and coffee. Breakfast is free, but donations are accepted.

Vacation Bible School is the Week of July 15-19 from 6-8:30 p.m. The theme is Galilee-By-The-Sea: Catch Jesus in Action. Ages 3 and up are invited to attend. Parents also are welcome. Children under 3 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. Come at 5:30 p.m. for a light dinner.

Art and letters

Ruth Smith, president of the Western Pocono Lioness Club, reports that the Patriotic Coloring Contest the club held recently resulted in a lot of fun for the participating children and families as well as beautiful creations and moving letters to be sent to local Armed Forces personnel through Operation: Touch of Home.

The club's board will meet at noon, July 10, at Cherry's Sunset Diner in Kresgeville. Members are welcome to join the board gathering for the luncheon meeting at her own expense.

Safe Haven Pet Rescue

Safe Haven Pet Rescue will hold an adoption day from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Sunday, July 21, at Tractor Supply, Route 209, Brodheadsville.

Safe Haven will have many young dogs available for you to meet and get to know. Safe Haven requires a pre-adoption application with references and a home visit before adoption.
