Lenten services

Effort UMC meets in the sanctuary at 7 p.m. Each week the message will be given by a person from a different area of leadership within the church. Today's focus will be suffering and humiliation based on Mark 15:16-19.

On Sunday there will be a children's choir presentation.

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church offers Stations of the Cross at 7 p.m. every Friday in Lent. A fish dinner hosted by the Knights of Columbus will be held from 6-8 p.m. Friday in McCawley Hall. There is a cost.

AARP driver class

This Saturday and next, from 1 to 5 p.m., an AARP Driver Safety Class will be offered at the Chestnuthill Park Building in Brodheadsville. It is for drivers 50 and older, but no AARP membership is required. There is a registration fee.

Class is taught by an unpaid, trained volunteer.

A four-hour refresher course, for those who have taken the full course in the past three years, will be offered May 16 at the Chestnuthill Park Building.

Power of prayer

A Pastors & Ministry Leaders Day of Prayer will be held from 9-11 a.m. March 14.

Participants are asked to come together at Mountaintop Christian Community Church, 113 Pilgrim Way in Brodheadsville. A fellowship breakfast will be served after prayer.

The purpose of the gathering is to strengthen each other through the power of prayer.

Historical society

The Chestnuthill Township Historical Society meeting is set for tonight, beginning at 7 p.m. at Chestnuthill Township Park, Brodheadsville.

It will be Show and Tell Night. Attendees are asked to bring an item, tell the story and pass it around.

Annual dues for 2015 can be paid now.

Ash Wednesday services

Effort UMC will hold its worship service at 7 p.m., with the message being The Everlasting Supper, based on Luke 22:14-20.

McMichaels UMC will host an Ash Wednesday service at 7 p.m.

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Gilbert, will have services and Mass: 7 a.m.-Service/Ashes; 12:10 p.m. Mass/Ashes; 4 p.m. Service/Ashes; 7 p.m. Mass/Ashes.

Pleasant Valley Presbyterian, Brodheadsville, will be having an Ash Wednesday service at 7 p.m. after a light supper at 6.

St. John's Lutheran, Effort, will have an Ash Wednesday service at 7 p.m.

Consolidation news

The Growing Place Child Care Centers have consolidated its programs into two of the local elementary schools within the Pleasant Valley School District that have been closed due to low enrollment. Staff is thrilled to have infants through school age children together in one building.

The families enjoy the school setting where each age group has its own classroom. The older children are thrilled to see the infants and toddlers each day.

AARP Tax Assistance

The AARP Tax Assistance Group from Lehighton will be responsible for the site in the West End. This site is in Gilbert at the Salem United Church of Christ on Monday and Thursday mornings, 9 a.m. to noon.

If Pleasant Valley School District has a two-hour delay, the hours of operation will be 10 a.m. to noon.

Senior dinner

Monroe County Seniors meeting at Zion Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall in Brodheadsville will have meatloaf for Friday.

Attendees are reminded to call the site manager at 570-242-6770 by 11 a.m. the day before.

Blood drive

Anyone who missed the recent American Red Cross blood drives in Brodheadsville or Kunkletown can donate at the Monroe County Career and Technical Institute on Friday.

The Western Pocono Lions Club will meet at 7 p.m. today at the Old Mill Pizza Restaurant in Sciota.

The West End Rotary Club will have guests Rachel Ann Stalcoskie and Bruce Kolar, owners of Rachel Ann's Country Clips Pet Grooming, at the Thursday meeting.

Gwendolyn and the poodle Isolda will also be attending.

The club meets at 7:30 a.m. Thursdays at the Western Pocono Community Library in the community room.

The Chestnut Ridge Seniors will meet at 11 a.m. Jan. 22 at the Kunkletown Volunteer Fire Company. Bring a bag lunch and vacation pictures for a Show and Tell/Vacation Picture Day. They will be playing bingo.

The History of Monroe County Education Series by the Monroe County Historical Association is being hosted by Mrs. Bush's Personal Care Homes Inc., Kunkletown. The free presentation is open to the community and will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Mrs. Bush's, 302 Kunkletown Road.
