The Jim Thorpe Community Watch meetings for 2012 will start on Feb. 16. They will be held at 7 p.m., on the third Thursday of the month, at Jim Thorpe Memorial Park.

This year's meetings will feature guest speakers. The meetings and guest speakers are as follows:

Feb. 16: Chief Joseph Schatz will speak on elder care. Officer David Joseph will also be visiting.

March 15: Mark Janner, a martial arts instructor, will provide some self-defense lessons.

April 19: Carbon County Communications Center representatives will show proper procedures when making a 911 call.

Essay contest finalist

The students at Saint Joseph Regional Academy, Jim Thorpe, submitted Stand Up For Life Essays. The essay contest was co-sponsored by the Knights of Columbus of the Diocese of Allentown and the The Diocesan Office of Pro-Life Activities and Social Concerns.

Spencer Wahlmark, a seventh-grade student, was a finalist in the Junior Division, with the theme "On the Dignity of Life." An awards banquet was held on Jan. 15 at the Columbian Home in Allentown.

Financial Aid night

The Jim Thorpe Area High School guidance office will hold a Financial Aid Night on Tuesday, Jan. 31, at 6:30 p.m., in the high school auditorium. This presentation will be open to any interested students and parents.

A representative from the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) will conduct the presentation. Guidance personnel will be available after the program to answer specific questions pertaining to aid for college.

Snow date will be Wednesday, Feb. 1.

Volunteers needed

The Shepherd House Food Pantry at Ebenezer E. C. Church, Centre Ave., serves 100 families each month and that number is growing due to the unemployment rate increase.

Volunteers are needed to help unload the food delivery truck and stock the shelves. Without the generous help of volunteers the pantry cannot provide this food assistance to the community.

If you are available to donate a few hours of your time the morning of Jan. 25, call (570) 325-2855.

Food pantry slated

The Shepherd House Food Pantry at Ebenezer E.C. Church will be open on Saturday, Jan. 14 from 9-11 a.m. Recipients must reside within the Jim Thorpe School District and fall within TEFAP income guidelines. The pantry is located at 441 Center Ave. in Jim Thorpe. Please park in the Cherry Avenue parking lot and enter through the rear entrance.

The Jim Thorpe Olympian Touchdown Booster Club will meet this evening at 6 p.m. in the commons area of the high school.

This is an organizational meeting and it is hoped as many parents and friends as possible can make it. There will be organizing of committees for the 2012 season.

Penn Forest Twp. transfer station

The Penn Forest Township Transfer Station will be closed on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1.

The new transfer station hours will start Jan. 2, 2012.

They are: Sunday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday and Saturday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m., and Wednesday, 11 a.m.-7 p.m.

All transfer station/garbage fees should be paid by Jan. 6, 2012 to avoid the penalty fee.

The municipal building will be closed Dec. 26 and Jan. 2, the normal business hours for 2012 will be Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.

The American Red Cross bloodmobile will be stationed at Memorial Hall on Wednesday, Dec. 21. Please give the gift of life and donate to this worthy cause. It will be at the hall from 1-6 p.m. and donors must be 17 years of age.

Christmas Eve service

St. John's Lutheran Church, South Avenue, will hold its Christmas Eve Holy Communion service on Saturday, beginning at 7 p.m. There will be no church services or Sunday School on Christmas Day. Services will resume on New Year's Sunday, with 9:15 a.m. Sunday School and 10:30 a.m. service of lessons and carols.

Children's party

The Diligent Fire Company will hold its annual Christmas party on Saturday, Dec. 17, beginning at 1 p.m. The event is open to children of the community up to the age of 10.
