There was a great turnout for the August Touchdown Club meeting. Organizers are grateful for the parents who showed up and provided input on the spiritwear design and other fundraising ideas and also volunteered their time for upcoming events.

Important dates to remember: Aug. 17 team and individual photos will be taken between practices at approximately 11:15 a.m. Photo packets and information will be sent home with your child next week.

There are new office hours for the Penn Forest Township building inspector and zoning officer.

The zoning officer will be in the office on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.

The building inspector will be in the office on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8-11 a.m.

The Shepherd House Food Pantry at Ebenezer E.C. Church will be open on Saturday, July 14 from 9-11 a.m. Recipients must reside within the Jim Thorpe Area School District. The pantry is located at 441 Center Ave. in Jim Thorpe.

Class reunions

Jim Thorpe Area High School Class of 1972 will hold a meeting on Thursday, July 12, at the home of Mary McElmoyle at 7 p.m.

The reunion for the classes of 1955-1965, Jim Thorpe High School will be held on Sept. 29. Reservations must be made by Aug. 1. The reunion will be held at Whispering Pines, Route 903, Penn Forest Fire Company.

Amanda Freeby will be the director of this year's Vacation Bible School. The theme will be Amazing Desert Journey. It will be held from July 23-July 27, at St. John's Lutheran Church, 6th and North Streets. Local churches should have received registration forms, however you may call Ms Freeby, at (570) 401-3729. She is also looking for volunteers to help, and high school students may use this as part of the graduation project.

Borough news

The annual water reports for the Jim Thorpe Borough have been mailed to the residents. If you did not receive one and would like one, please call the borough office, at (570) 325-3025.

The borough council has announced that there is a position on the Civil Service Commission and any resident of the borough interested should send a letter of interest to the borough office. They are also looking for part-time police officers. Applications can be picked up at the borough office and the deadline for both is July 14.Volunteers

Bereavement workshop

A six-week bereavement workshop will be held from June 20 through July 25, from 6-7:30 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, 189 Church Road, Penn Forest Township.

Football Booster Club

The Jim Thorpe Olympian Football Booster Club will meet this evening, Monday, June 4, at 6 p.m. in the Jim Thorpe Area High School Commons.

The agenda will include reviewing fundraisers to date, program sales and a speed camp update.

The biggest fundraiser over the summer is selling ads for the football program. This year is extra special since the team will be playing its home games in the Jim Thorpe Stadium for the first time in two years. Email Kathy Schwartz ( for program letters to send to your favorite businesses.

Bible study

The next gathering of the Women's Ecumenical Bible Study will be held on Wednesday, May 23, at 6:30 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, South Avenue. It will be held in the Good Shepherd room of the church.

Dean's list

Laura McGavin, daughter of Len and Joann McGavin of town, has been placed on the dean's list at the University of the Cumberlands, Williamsburg, Ky.

Laura is majoring in psychology and when she returns for the fall semester, she will be a senior. She is a graduate of Carbon County Technical Institute.

Veterans Day program

The kindergarten classes at the L.B. Morris Elementary School will be hosting a Veterans Day Program on Friday, May 25, at 1 p.m. at the school. All veterans of the community are invited to attend the program. Refreshments will be served following the program. There are 90 students in the kindergarten classes and are under the direction of their teachers, Erica O'Donnell, Ginger Flisack, Shannon Fannock and Shawn Bierman.
