Night of the arts

The Tamaqua Area Middle School presents "Night of the Arts" this Thursday, May 6, beginning at 6 p.m. The evening will include the annual student art show, a professional exhibit and the Spring Choral Concert.

The art show will be held from 6-7:30 the south wing of the Tamaqua Area Middle School. In addition to the art work from students in grades 6, 7 and 8, a professional exhibit, "Art Beyond Borders," will showcase the work of 24 artists from 24 different countries.

Summit Hill

Presbyterian church

In celebration of the National Day of Prayer on Thursday, May 6, the Hope of Christ Presbyterian Church, Summit Hill, will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This will be an opportunity for anyone wishing to come to the church to participate in a time of prayer and meditation. All faiths are welcome.

Northern Lehigh Community Center

A Computer and Electronics Recycling Day will be held at the future site of the Northern Lehigh Community Center.

The event will be held Friday, May 21, from 3:30-5:30 p.m., and Saturday, May 22, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

At that time, residents will be able to drop off all their old computer and electronic equipment at the site, located at 563 West Church St., Slatington.

Rush-Ryan seniors

The Rush, Ryan and Delano Senior Citizens Inc. met April 27 at the Ryan Township Fire Company with 42 members in attendance.

Golden agers

At the beginning of the April 26 meeting of the Panther Valley Golden Agers, there was a moment of silence observed for past member Jasper Tessitore.

President Bazik opened the meeting with a prayer and Pledge of Allegiance. The Sunshine Lady had only one on the sick list.

On July 12, the group will have a guest speak on the prevention of identity theft. The public is invited to attend.

Members celebrating April, May, and June birthdays will be honored at the June 14 meeting.

New parish

The Rev. Deb Hoffman, assistant pastor at Effort UMC, has announced her new appointment.

She will be taking her many talents to Wooddale UMC, in the more northern portion of Monroe County. Both she and The Rev. David Felker will be providing their last worship leadership on Sunday, June 20.

A retired local pastor will be filling the pulpit on June 27 for both services. A member of the congregation will be filling the pulpit on June 26.

The Lehighton Area Democrats will be having their last meeting before the summer break on May 5 at 7 p.m. at Johnnie's Restaurant, 111 N. 1st St. in Lehighton. This meeting will be a social get-together and a preview of the new Democratic Election Headquarters at 101 N. 1st St. Food and drink will be available for purchase.

Members of the Jim Thorpe Touchdown Club will meet on Tuesday, May 4, at 6 p.m. in the high school commons area.

Bereavement group

The bereavement group of St. Joseph's Church, will meet this evening from 7-8:30 p.m., in the Brogan Room of the church. The group will be meeting through May 24, and if you have any questions or wish more information call the church office, (570) 325-3731.

Senior center

Fran Craigie, Panther Valley Senior Center manager, has announced that on May 1 there will be pay bingo at 11 a.m. and the Sunshine meeting will be held after lunch.

From May 4 through May 14 the center will be closed due to the Senior Games.

Starting May 17 dice will be played at 11 a.m. May 18 there will be a bus trip to the Sands Casino, leaving at 10 a.m. from CVS. May 19 is pay bingo at 11 a.m. May 20 is Penny bingo at 11 a.m. May 21 the center will be open but there will be shopping on the CCCT leaving at 9:30 a.m.
