The Palmerton Area Library, 402 Delaware Ave., Palmerton, has started a volunteer program.

Volunteers may be asked to work in the book sale, summer reading program, be a weekly reader or work with special projects. A volunteer may also adopt a shelf, work on a scrapbooking project, or help shelve materials. Volunteers can be a family group, adult, student, or social group.

Please call the library at (610) 826-3424 or come into the library for more information and a volunteer application.

Alzheimer's walk

The Second Annual Alzheimer's Family Fun Festival and Memory Walk is being planned for Oct. 9 at Mauch Chunk Lake Park in Carbon County. As part of this year's festivities, a Wall of Memories pictorial display will feature photos of local people suffering with Alzheimer's disease.

To have a loved one included in the display, mail photos to 38 Chestnut Hill, Jim Thorpe, PA 18229. At this time, there are no provisions to have photos returned, so pease don't send your original photos. For more information on the event, contact Kathy Ruff at (570) 645-3059.

Golden Agers

The meeting of the Panther Valley Golden Agers on June 14 opened with a Flag Day Prayer given by Vice President Shirley Pavlick. It was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of "God Bless America."

Twelve birthday celebrants for April, May, and June were honored. "Happy Birthday" was sung by the members and a Byzantine hymn was sung by Alex Shereba. Rose Mary Mikulski was the winner of the floral arrangement donated by Porvaznik's Florist. Kennedy Pharmacy donated birthday gifts.

Perfect attendance

Several students in the Tamaqua Area School District's three elementary schools were presented with perfect attendance awards at the conclusion of the 2009-2010 school year.

Students at Tamaqua Elementary School included: Julia Bailey, Sarah Bailey, Emily Barrett, Brian Bergstresser, Myah Bloss, Kayla Frye, Antonetta Gerace, Alyssa Kattner, Sarah Martinez, Camerin Miller, Damian Miller, Sierra Minarchick, Julio Perez, Connor Ruch, Donovan Yulanavage and Kayla Zamudio.

Vacation Bible school

Registration is open for SonQuest Rain Forest this summer at Cornerstone Church where an Amazing Amazon Adventure Awaits your kids.

Children will "travel" to places like Toucan's Tree-mendous Tropical Treehouse and cross the bridge into Parable Falls.

Visit the Jumpin' Jungle filled with many jungle critters including parrots, frogs, leopards, monkeys and even colorful lizards.

Children will learn songs, create crafts, play games and explore the lessons of God's love for them.

The program is for ages 4 to entering grade 6 in the fall.

The Panther Valley High School graduates who purchased graduation handshake photos from Flexer Photo Studios can pick them up in the high school office between 7:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Summit Hill

SHCIO to meet

A special meeting of the Summit Hill Community Improvement Organization will be held on Monday, June 28, at 7 p.m. in the borough hall. Members will be discussing a Labor Day fundraiser and the Ludlow Park Project. Borough residents are welcome to join the organization and offer ideas to improve the town.

Park concert

Remember When will be the band performing at this week's Sunday in the Park concert.

The band will begin at 7 p.m., June 27 in the Palmerton Borough Park Bandshell.

In case of rain, the event will be held in the Borough Hall, 443 Delaware Ave. Please bring a lawn chair.

The concert is sponsored by Keystone Nazareth Bank & Trust.

Bible School

Vacation Bible School will be held at First United Church of Christ from 6-8 p.m. July 12-16. This year's theme is Rainforest.

Senior news

The Tamaqua Senior Citizens group met last week with 76 members in attendance. President Jean Machamer conducted the business session and provided readings.

Eleanor Roberts offered the invocation, entitled "What Makes A Dad." Secretary Eleanor Schmerfeld provided her weekly report.

The next meeting will be held June 24, at 1 p.m., at the Tamaqua Community Center, located to the rear of Boyer's Food Mart.

Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join.
