PV Senior Center

Here is a list of upcoming activities during the month of April at the Panther Valley Senior Center, 90 E. Catawissa St., Nesquehoning.

All activities begin at 11 a.m. unless otherwise noted. Sign in by 10:30 a.m. for the next day's lunch.

Egg hunt

The newly reorganized North and Middle Ward Playground Association will sponsor a community Easter Egg Hunt on April 12, at the Washington Street playground. Registration will begin at noon, with the hunt scheduled to start at 2 p.m.

Refreshments will be available.

Pool passes

Applications for season passes to the H.D. Buehler Memorial (Bungalow) Pool in Tamaqua will be available as of April 1. Opening day will be the day after the last day of the 2013-2014 school year (May 31 unless rescheduled).

Lenten service

The next Lenten service will be at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 9 at Salem UCC in Gilbert. The Rev. Deb Scheffey will be the guest preacher.

There will be a soup and sandwich hour beginning at 6:30 p.m. Salem UCC will provide the soup, you bring your own sandwich.

Chestnut Ridge Seniors

The Chestnut Ridge Seniors will meet at 11 a.m., Thursday, April 10 at the Kunkletown Volunteer Fire Co. They will be celebrating Easter with Easter eggs and cupcakes. They will be playing bingo. Bring a bag lunch.

Trinity happenings

Trinity Lutheran Church, 175 S. Third St., Lehighton will hold Sunday worship with holy communion at 9 a.m. Interim pastor, the Rev. Guy R. Grube, will preside. Coffeehouse fellowship follows.

Sunday School classes meet for students ages 3 through grade 12 at 10:30 a.m.

Wednesdays-in-Lent worship continue weekly through April 9. There is a simple soup supper at 6 p.m. followed by devotional worship at 7 p.m.

Slatington Lions Club

Help the LEOS package cookies for Meals on Wheels by baking or purchasing two dozen cookies.

The cookies can be brought to the district convention at the Sheraton Jetport on Airport Road, beginning at 7 a.m. on Saturday, April 5 at the registration desk. The LEOS will be making up cookie boxes for delivery to Meals on Wheels recipients.

Lion David Meixsell (April 5) is celebrating a birthday.

Nesquehoning

VFW Ladies Auxiliary

The regular monthly meeting of the Ladies Auxiliary to Nesquehoning Memorial VFW Post 8008 will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 8, at the Post Home on E. Center Street.

Members are asked to note the change in time.

Nomination and election of officers will be held at this meeting for the 2014-2015 term. All members are encouraged to attend.

Older and bolder

The Salvation Army's Older and Bolder group meets Wednesdays, from 10 a.m. to noon, at the Salvation Army, 105 W. Broad St. Regular meetings include a light luncheon.

Since its beginning in 2009, as a way for seniors to get together and discuss important topics, the program has grown and spun off additional programs, such as the Bell Choir, the Needlebugs Quilting group and Exerette gentle exercise.

Lenten services

Effort United Methodist Church begins its Lenten evening with soup and salad at 5:15 p.m., a study time using Adam Hamilton's Final Words from the Cross, from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. and a Lenten worship service in the sanctuary from 7 to 7:30 p.m.

Our Lady Queen of Peace, Gilbert, will continue with its Following Christ program from 6:15 to 8:45 p.m. That time includes dinner, worship through prayer and music and a teaching followed by small group discussion.

Palmerton Community News

Street cleaning

The borough street cleaning program runs April 1 through Oct. 31. Signs are posted on each street, indicating the day for that street's schedule.

Cars are to remain off the street after the street sweeper has passed to allow the Public Works Department to perform any needed maintenance.

The schedule can also be found on the borough website at www.palmertonborough.com.

Summit Hill

Shade Tree Commission

The Summit Hill Shade Tree Commission will be conducting its annual Arbor Day ceremony and tree plantings at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 26 in Ludlow Park at the gazebo.

This is the first of several events to take place in Ludlow Park this year to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the park.
