Slatington Lions Club

The Slatington Lions Club will hold a board meeting at 7 p.m. Jan. 15 at the Skeet Club.

Lions Jeff Kunkle (Jan. 6), Richard Fox (Jan. 13), and John Stenger (Jan. 14) are celebrating birthdays.

The club is always looking for new members.

Panther Valley

Golden Agers

The Panther Valley Golden Agers will meet on Monday, Jan. 13 at the St. John Slovak Lutheran Church, 1 E. Abbott St., Lansford, weather permitting. Bingo is scheduled to be played.

Members celebrating birthdays September through December will be honored. Dues for 2014 are being collected now through April.

The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 27 weather permitting.

Sorority news

The Preceptor Alpha Upsilon chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority met Dec. 12 at the home of Wanda Keefer, who presented an informative program on the possible harmful ingredients sometimes found in daily care products. Members learned what to look for on the labels of items including hand lotions, lipsticks and shampoo.

Following the business meeting, a Secret Sister gift exchange was held, followed by a buffet meal provided by the hostess and her daughter, Brie.

Touchdown Club

The Jim Thorpe Olympian Touchdown Booster Club will meet this evening at 6 o'clock in the high school auditorium. On the agenda will be the banquet preparations, 2014 golf tournament, sweat shirt fundraiser and the 2014 officers and committees.

Parents, guardians and friends of the football participants are invited to attend the monthly meetings.

Newspaper drive

Members of St. John's Lutheran Church will hold their monthly newspaper drive on Saturday, Jan. 4. There will be one sweep of the Palmerton, Aquashicola, and Little Gap areas beginning at 8 a.m.

Papers should be bundled and placed within sight of the collectors. They are collecting papers only, no magazines. The shiny inserts are acceptable. They also need grocery size brown paper bags.

Chestnut Ridge Seniors

The Chestnut Ridge Seniors will meet at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 9 at the Kunkletown Volunteer Fire Co. Bring a bag lunch. They will be playing bingo.

Blood drive

The American Red Cross will be holding a blood drive and double red cells drive from 1-6 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 29.

Financial aid

The Tamaqua Area High School Guidance Department will sponsor an informational Financial Aid Night on Jan. 16. The event will begin at 6 p.m. and be held in the district auditorium.

The 2013-2014 Financial Aid form will be reviewed and general financial aid questions will be answered. Junior and senior class students planning to further their education, as well as their parents, are welcome to attend.

No preregistration or fee is required.

Pool receives grant

The Northern Lehigh Swimming Pool has acknowledged receipt of a $4,077 grant from the Henry L. Mickley/Mable S. Fravel Charitable Trust. The money will go toward the completion of the renovation of the main and baby pools this coming spring.

The 2014 season will open with a complete refurbishment of both pools.

The Swimming Pool Association will hold its annual board of directors reorganization meeting at 7:30 p.m., Feb. 25, in the faculty room at the Slatington Elementary School.
