Penn Forest house uninhabitable after fire

A home on the 100 block of Towamensing Trails in Penn Forest Township appears to be a complete loss after a fire on Thursday afternoon.

Penn Forest Volunteer Fire Company Number 2 under the guidance of Assistant Chief Dave Michaels Jr., arrived on the scene of the residential blaze at 1:15 p.m.Penn Forest Number 1, Lake Harmony and Albrightsville fire companies were all on scene by 1:30 p.m."The fire was knocked down pretty quickly," Michaels said. "But it is the extensions and the overhaul that take a lot of time and energy."Tobyhanna and Tunkhannock fire companies were called in for additional manpower and arrived on scene around 2:30 p.m. Polk Volunteer Fire Company was also on scene."We need the extra manpower and the younger guys to help out during the day," said Rich Small, safety officer for Albrightsville Volunteer Fire Company. "If you had old guys like me going in, they would need to come in and haul me out.""Manpower during the day has always been our biggest issue," Michaels said. "After 7:30 in the morning and before 5 at night, everybody has to work."Luckily manpower did not play a part in the damage to the home, as Michaels said the fire was knocked down quickly."The fire appears to have started in the back of the dryer," Michaels said. "The walk-in closet behind the dryer added to the problem."Michaels said that there was extensive smoke damage to the home and that the smoke damage alone would be enough to render the home uninhabitable.Michaels did not have the homeowner's name, but said that there were four adults and four children living in the home at the time of the fire. No one was injured.Lehighton Ambulance was on-site during the incident and Mahoning Valley provided a rehab ambulance for the firefighters.According to Small the temperature played a big part in the fatigue of the firefighters."It gets really hot in the turnout gear," Small said. "The more you sweat the heavier it gets. It is important to stay hydrated.""I am so proud to be a part of this group of incredible firefighters," Michaels said. "You are so happy when you see them pull up in their trucks and you know they are there to help out. It is truly a pleasure and an honor to work with these guys."According to Michaels, all fire equipment had left the scene by 6 p.m.
