Raiders run past Mahanoy Area

A dominant running back is a luxury that most football teams do not have. On Friday night, the Tamaqua Blue Raiders showed that Stadium Hill could possibly be the most luxurious place to strap on the cleats this season in the Schuylkill League, as the Raiders boast not one, but two first-class running backs in Nick Breiner and Nate Boyle.

Breiner and Boyle served up a five-star performance, combining for 320 yards on the ground and four touchdowns en route to the Raiders' 34-7 non-league victory over Mahanoy Area.Under head coach Sam Bonner, the Raiders (2-0) have always been a power running team, so it was no surprise they looked to establish the run early against the Bears (0-2)The "B and B train" did just that in the first half, with Breiner getting the ball rolling with a 61-yard scamper in the first quarter and Boyle adding two short-yardage scores in the second frame. Both running backs possess the ability to run between the tackles and bounce it outside if need be, and Mahanoy simply didn't have an answer for the duo throughout the night."Nick and Nate really complement each other, and what makes them both so good is that they don't go down on first contact," said Bonner. "We still have to gel a little more on the offensive line, we have some young kids up front, and they're playing hard, but we definitely have to be better there as the season goes on, because the schedule is only going to get tougher. But our two backs are really making us all look good out there right now."Tamaqua quarterbacks Thad Zuber and Brayden Knoblauch showed how well they could lead the Raiders' offense in Week 1, and they didn't disappoint in week two. The pair combined to go 8-of-10 for 139 yards through the air with one touchdown and no interceptions. Zuber and Knoblauch bring that same type of versatility and skill to the quarterback position that Breiner and Boyle bring to the backfield. "We have the capability to keep teams off balance, especially if we establish the run early," Bonner said. "We have two talented quarterback that can really throw the football. It's just always nice to have that versatility. I don't think we have one kid in our backfield that doesn't know how to play two or three positions. We have a lot of guys that have been playing a lot of different position for us this season, and they're doing it pretty well."Mahanoy couldn't get much going on offense, coming up with just one successful drive on the night thanks to the hard running of quarterback Matt Lewandowski. On the Bears final possession of the first half, Lewandowski broke off two big runs of 34 and 25 yards to set up a MJ Terry two-yard plunge for Mahanoy's lone score.Other than that, the Raiders took care of business up front against both the Bears' triple option rushing attack and their passing game. In fact, Tamaqua didn't allow a completion, and held the Mahanoy rushing attack to 183 yards."For the most part we did a good job of staying discipline, we had a couple of mistakes here and there, but our kids corrected them," said Bonner. "Lewandowski is a special athlete and we wanted to make sure he didn't kill us. He made some plays tonight, but I thought we kept them pretty much in check and I was really please with our effort."STINGY FRONT... The Raiders didn't surrender a first down until the 8:07 mark in the second quarter and forced the Bears to punt the ball five times..GRINDING AWAY... Tamaqua was efficient on offense throughout the game. The Raiders did not turn the ball over, rushed for 358 yards, and had 19 first downs. Tamaqua only punted once and also neared the 500-yard mark in total offense (497).
