A Facebook page for the Lehighton Police Department was given the blessing to proceed with setup at the Lehighton Borough Council meeting Monday night.

The department intends to use the Facebook page as a way to give the public notifications of police activity. Police Chief Brian Biechy said the page would serve as outward communication, but that residents should still call the station for direct, nonemergency questions or comments for the police.Members of the council called the page a "necessary evil," but said that the department should have one to keep up with the times.In other business• Joel Gulla and Trevin Green were sworn in as new police officers for the borough. Gulla has been serving with the Lehighton police for the past six years as a part time office. Green is new to the Lehighton force. Police Chief Brian Biechy said Green's training was going well.
