Pen Argyl sweeps No. Lehigh

The Northern Lehigh track teams are still rounding into form.

Early season meets often provide opportunities for the Bulldogs to find their rhythm in hopes of hitting their stride later in the season. That process continued in Tuesday's Colonial League contest against Pen Argyl. The Green Knights clinched a sweep, with the boys leading 91-50 at the end of the day while the girls held a 77-63 advantage. The meet scores will not be final until the completion of the javelin, which will be contested today."We're young," said Northern Lehigh head coach Michael Lehtonen. "Right now, we're trying to find some events that match where we can best score or best perform."It's early in the year right now. For a lot of them, this was only our second meet. But the year also goes quick. So we've gotta figure out some things. But we're doing all right."Northern Lehigh had several strong individual performances against Pen Argyl. After placing first in the triple jump at Saturday's Zephyr Duals, Jill Olewine won the long jump (15-8.75) and triple jump (32-6.25) Tuesday despite being under the weather."Right now, I'm kinda struggling a little," said Olewine. "I have a sinus infection so I'm happy with how I did today for being sick. But I'm not satisfied. I still have a lot of work to do."In addition to Olewine, Reagan Pender (1600, 3200) and Darby Pender (100 hurdles, 300 hurdles) also secured wins in multiple events for the Lady Bulldogs."I'm glad that I was able to improve my time and my placing in both my races," said Reagan, who won the 1600 in 6:17.3 and captured the 3200 with a time of 13:30.0.Darby Pender posted solid times of 17.5 in the 100 hurdles and followed that with a 51.3 in the 300 hurdles."Today, I'm very happy with my performance," Darby said afterward. "The 300 hurdles ... I haven't done them since last season. So I thought I wasn't going to get a decent time. But I pushed myself and I did better than I thought I would, so I'm proud of myself."Jackie Ni has enjoyed a strong start to the season for the Northern Lehigh boys. While Ni placed first in the shot put (44-2.5) Tuesday, it was his second place in the discus (124-0) that stuck with him the most."Today wasn't too great," said Ni, who has a personal best of 144-6 in the discus this season. "Last week I was throwing 140s and 130s. I did well in warm-ups but I couldn't transfer that to the competition. There's good days and bad days."Nick Miller placed second in the pole vault at the Zephyr Duals, clearing a personal best 11-6. Miller carried that momentum into Tuesday winning the event with a height of 11-0."I knew I had first place and then went straight to 11-9, skipped 11-6, just for a personal record," said Miller. "This season, during practice, I've been doing pretty well. The meets, weather-wise, haven't been so great. But when we get some nice, sunny days, it will all come together."WINNERS... In the girls' meet, Northern Lehigh's Franki Dibilio won the shot put (30-11.25) while Andrea Snyder placed first in the discus (84-10). On the boys' side, Preston Kemery won the 3200 (11:30.2) for the Bulldogs, and Hunter Haas took first in the triple jump (33-05.50).IN THE MIX...
