ATV rider faces gun charge

A Schuylkill County all-terrain vehicle rider is facing a gun charge following an incident that occurred at 3:02 p.m. Saturday.

State police at Frackville said a trooper on patrol saw a Yamaha ATV on the roadway in the area of Morea Road and East Oak Street in West Mahanoy Township. The trooper was able to catch up with the ATV on Morea Road about a half-mile east of Eleanor Drive.The ATV operator pulled onto the right shoulder as the trooper activated his emergency lights and siren. The man, identified as John Paul Dasilva, 24, of McAdoo, attempted to make a U-turn and rolled the ATV onto its right side on the double yellow lines. At this point the trooper managed to take the operator into custody.Troopers found a Springfield Armory 9mm pistol with a full magazine containing 15 bullets in Dasilva's right pocket of his cargo pants. Dasilva said he was the owner of the gun but did not have a valid license to carry it.Troopers said Dasilva, who was not injured in the incident, was charged with carrying a firearm without a valid license and several motor vehicle code violations.Troopers also thanked the citizens who stopped to help and render aid during the incident.
