Eckley Village makes Pa. top tourist destination list

A local tourist destination is listed among Pennsylvania sites that offer visitors a unique glimpse at the past.

Eckley Miners' Village near Weatherly is listed in sixth position out of 16 villages "that will transport you into a different time," according to the website Onlyinyourstate.com.The site, which released the list Feb. 3, says Eckley give visitors an idea of what life was like during the reign of King Coal."Located in eastern Pennsylvania, Eckley Miners' Village educates visitors about the story of anthracite coal mining along with patch towns and their residents, through the preservation and exploration of the site and its collection. Come for a visit and experience life at coal patch towns during the time when coal was an essential industrial fuel," states the website.Volunteers and others who work in preserving Eckley's historical integrity are happy about the village's inclusion on the list."It's pretty cool," said Bode Morin, Eckley site administrator, on Monday.Onlyinyourstate.com periodically releases listings that touch on a wide variety of categories.For instance, on Jan. 7, the site came up with "The 10 most underrated towns in Pennsylvania."The town of Jim Thorpe was listed seventh."Jim Thorpe is known as the 'Switzerland of Pennsylvania' due to its charming architecture, small-town vibe, and mountainous terrain. It is a destination for many outdoorsmen and women who enjoy white-water rafting and hiking," states the site.That list also included the town of Emmaus in third position.According to HypeStat, a website tracker, Onlyinyourstate.com receives about 99,600 unique visitors and 128,484 page views per day.The site is hosted at Matawan, New Jersey.
