Wrong-way driver causes crash

A driver going the wrong way on a Schuylkill County roadway has been blamed for a crash. State police at Schuylkill Haven said the incident occurred at 3:57 p.m. Aug. 15 along Route 61 southbound in North Manheim Township.

Troopers said Dennis L. Weist, 72, of Pottsville, driving a 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis, entered Route 61 from the parking lot of a veterinary business and began going northbound in the southbound lanes. As he traveled, numerous vehicles had to swerve to avoid hitting with his vehicle.Abigail M. Fanelli, 19, of Schuylkill Haven, driving a 2015 Ford Fiesta, was unable to go around Weist's vehicle and had to stop. Thomas B. Wagner, 74, of Berwick, driving a 2015 Chevrolet Colorado, was unable to stop and ran into the rear of Fanelli's vehicle.Fanelli and Wagner were not injured.Troopers said Weist continued northbound in the southbound lanes and exited Route 61 at South Center Street. He was stopped a short time later by Pottsville city police. Troopers cited Weist for causing the crash.
