Marian pulls out epic final

MINERSVILLE - There will be momentum swings throughout the course of any game.

Successful teams are able to harness the energy when they have it, and minimize its effects when they don't.In Thursday night's District 11 Class A final, both Marian and Nativity had moments where it appeared either side could take control of the match with one sudden scoring burst. With their fourth consecutive district championship on the line, the Fillies once again found a way to rise to the occasion.Utilizing a late surge in the decisive fifth set, Marian punched its ticket to the PIAA Volleyball Championships with a wild 22-25, 25-15, 25-15, 23-25, 15-11 triumph over Nativity. The victory was the Fillies' third straight over the Green Wave in the district final."You can't explain it. It's the Marian-Nativity rivalry," Marian head coach John Fallabel said. "It's the biggest rivalry, and to be able to beat your biggest rival in a heated, well-played game, there's nothing better than this."The fifth set proved to be a microcosm of the back-and-forth match. With the two teams deadlocked on seven different occasions, the second-seeded Green Wave looked to have taken a critical step toward capturing their first district championship since 2011 by taking a late lead at 10-9.But the top-seeded Fillies put together what was arguably their most important scoring run of the season, surging ahead 13-10 and never looking back."That was a big deal for us," said sophomore Jasmine Mooney, who finished with 16 digs, 15 kills and six aces."When it was 13-10, I looked at our setter, Courtney McCall, and knew we were a good enough team to finish the game off."Though the outcome was far from certain, this is a Marian team that has proven itself capable of being able to win by any means necessary this season. While the victories might not be as convincing as last season, Fallabel knows his team has the resolve to step up and deliver when it needs to."They're not like last year's team - the well-oiled machine - by any means," Fallabel said. "They're all over the place on some things. But it's a good team, and they play together."They've played a lot of tough matches already. They had a five-game match against Blue Mountain (for the Schuylkill League championship) and they kept their heads, they kept their composure. They just go out and do what they have to do."Early on, it appeared as if Nativity had Marian's number, utilizing strong play at the net to neutralize the likes of Mooney and Abigail Stankiewitch, who finished with 12 kills and five digs. The Green Wave were able to block shots at will, highlighted by Cecelia DiNicola's team-high 11. Jocelyn Holobetz and Emily Yordy finished with three blocks apiece while Ashley Strausser recorded two."We pride ourselves on that and we work really hard at it. They did a phenomenal job," said Nativity head coach Jennifer Daubert. "Blocking is something that's not always the pretty thing; it's easy to get a kill. But it's so important to be able to get out and do those kind of things."But, much like they have all season and throughout Fallabel's tenure, the Fillies adjusted."We knew that we just had to bring in the cover a little bit and just focus on trying to get through the block, but if not just cover up our hitters," said Maureen Kloap, who tallied a team-high 19 kills while also notching 17 digs. The change in style gave Marian convincing wins in the second and third sets before Nativity narrowly took the fourth set, one that was tied 21-21 before the Green Wave closed it out. While the season comes to an end for Nativity, the focus for Marian shifts to returning to the state final for the third consecutive season."Our goal is Richland High School," Fallabel said of the location of the PIAA Volleyball Championships. "That's our next goal. We want to give ourselves a chance to get back there."THE MORE THINGS CHANGE. … Either Marian or Nativity has won every District 11 Class A championship since 2003. The Fillies have won eight district titles during that span to Nativity's five.NUMBERS GAME. … Marian's Gianna Agosti finished with a team-high 21 digs while McCall tallied 18.
