Carbon animal shelter planning painting party

Carbon County Animal Shelter is looking for a few people who like to paint and love animals.

The shelter, located at 63 Broad St. in Nesquehoning, will be hosting a painting party on Saturday between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. to provide a little brightness in the kennel area.Tom Connors, director of the shelter, said that they got the idea to paint murals in the kennels because this time of year is gloomy, so they wanted to give the dogs some fun things to look at while they wait for their forever families to adopt them.Paintings that have been started so far include trees, flowers, doghouses and more.Connors said that he is not looking for professional painters to do the murals, just people who want to have fun and have a love of animals. To date, 12 dogs call the shelter home, but the number fluctuates daily, Connors said.He thanked the community for all of the support the shelter has received over the past few years and said that so far the response with people wanting to participate in the painting party has been good. This is just one of the many things Connors and fellow employees and volunteers have been doing at the shelter in recent years.Last year, the former garage was transformed into a community room, with professional murals of dogs painted on the walls. There are also monthly clothing drives held to raise money to offset operating costs, and an annual yard sale held in July. For more information on the shelter, call 570-325-4828 or visit Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., or Saturday and Sundays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
