Police: Witness lied about Frein

A Canadensis man is accused of lying to police on Sept. 18 about Eric Frein, who has evaded authorities since he is believed to have gunned down a state trooper and wounded another on Sept. 12.

Michael Vincent Abuiso, 48, was charged Friday by state Trooper William Skotleski of Swiftwarer with unsworn falsification to authorities, making false reports to authorities, and furnishing authorities with false information without knowledge. All three charges are misdemeanors.Abuiso was issued a summons and assigned a lawyer through the Monroe County public defender's office.According to an affidavit of probable cause filed with District Judge Phillip R. Riley, Barrett Township, here's what happened:Skotleski on Sept. 18 was assigned to assist in the investigation of the shooting, which killed Cpl. Bryon Dickson and wounded Trooper Alex Douglass outside the Blooming Grove barracks in Pike County. At about 10 a.m., he was asked to contact Abuiso about a handwritten statement he had given to Barrett Township detective Ryan Venneman. The statement said that at the end of August he was working at his mother's house, which is near Frein's house. Frein stopped and asked if he was Mike Abuiso. Abuiso said he was, and then Frein asked if he remembered him. Abuiso wrote that he did not immediately recall Frein, but then Frein, also of Canadensis, told him who he was and where he lived. His testimonyAbuiso told police he talked with Frein for a few minutes, and then Frein mentioned that he'd read about Abuiso counterfeiting prescriptions. Abuiso wrote that Frein then asked if he could also counterfeit identifications, Social Security cards, driver's licenses, birth certificates and other documents.Abuiso wrote that Frein told him he was going on a trip to Canada and could not use his own identification because he was in trouble in Pennsylvania, and offered to pay $2,000 or $3,000 for counterfeit documents.Abuiso wrote that Frein went on a tirade about a trooper who lived near his brother, and called the trooper a self-rightous pig. Abuiso wrote that Frein talked about how troopers abuse their authority and should be shot, and that they should all be taken off the planet.Abuiso wrote that Frein went on a rant about Barrett Township police officer Larry Raisner, saying that Raisner had killed someone in the back seat of his police car and that nothing had happened. Abuiso wrote that Frein called Raisner a piece of (expletive) and that someone should have killed him by now, but that nobody in town had the (expletive).Skotleski and a Cpl. Tolan interviewed Abuiso at 11 a.m. Abuiso said Frein asked him which officer had arrested him on the prescription fraud charge. Abuiso told him it was Raisner. Frein said there are a few state troopers that think they are mightier than God, Abuiso told Skotleski and Tolan. He said Frein did not name a specific trooper. He told Skotleski and Tolan that Frein went on a tirade about a trooper who lives near his brother in Pike County.Abuiso told them he did not mention the conversation to anyone else.False statementsThey asked him about a friend he mentioned who lives in New York and who makes false identification documents. Abuiso said the man's name is Sean Dalton, and that he grew up with him.Skotleski began to question Abuiso about discrepancies between the written statement he gave to Venneman and the information he had just told to him and Tolan.Skotleski also challenged Abuiso on the known facts of the shooting versus the statements he attributed to Frein. Abuiso could not defend his statements.Skotleski asked Abuiso to submit to a polygraph test, but Abusio refused. Abuiso then admitted that he lied to Venneman.Abusio wrote another statement, in Tolan's presence, admitting to the falsehoods, and saying he was sorry. On Oct. 15, Skotleski contacted Dalton, who said he had seen nor heard from Abuiso in 25 years. He said he grew up with Abuiso in New York, and said he contacted him for the first time through FaceBook, and then Abuiso called him around the end of September. He said Abuiso told him he was in some trouble but was cooperating and did not need fake IDs anymore.
