Palmerton Council honors longtime volunteer

He's fun-loving, friendly and extremely family-oriented.

Those who have grown up in the Palmerton community over the past several decades have likely been mentored by Eugene "Gino" Roberts in one way or another. From basketball, to baseball, to football, and seemingly everything else in between, Gino's fingerprints are everywhere in the community where he was born and raised. This involvement is even more impressive because Gino has had diabetes for about 35 years, resulting in the amputation of both his legs.He lost the first leg around seven years ago, the second about five years ago, his wife, Cindy, said. For his extra efforts, ability to add something special for everyone to enjoy, and overall interest in the borough, Gino was recognized Thursday by borough council.Gino was recognized for many contributions, including coaching baseball teams, ranging from Little League through high school, starting in 1982; coaching basketball since 1982; from booster club to a time as head junior varsity coach in the 1990s; and helping to run a summer basketball camp for both boys and girls. He coached high school football in 1992, continuing for 10 years, and has for the past two years returned to coach booster club football.Councilman Kris Hoffner said Gino's distinction was well-earned."Gino has given the youth of our community immeasurable volunteer hours," Hoffner said. "He has been, and continues to be, a role model and inspiration for our youth, both as a coach, and as an example."Afterward, Councilman Richard Nothstein presented "Gino," who was accompanied by his wife and granddaughter Elisa Fegely, with a certificate. In typical Gino fashion, he accepted the recognition with humbleness."I'd like to thank you for (the certificate), but it's very undeserving," Roberts said."It's not just one person, it's more than one person."Gino took a moment to acknowledge all those who he said played a huge role in his life. They include his brother, Darryl Roberts, as well as mentors Terry Balliet, Manny Guedes, Richard Walck, Glen Hahn, Chris Anthony and Nothstein. He noted community support from Hagar's Furniture, Shea's Hardware, Country Harvest Family Market, Pencor Services Inc., and William Smelas from the Horsehead Community Development Fund and Horsehead Corporation.Gino credited his faith in God, his family and good friends for his success.Nothstein told "Gino" that he and his wife "are my heroes."
