Lady Bombers defeat Tigers

Northwestern Lehigh and Palmerton have had some crucial battles over the years in Colonial League play.

Despite the season being only a week old, the two teams took to the court against each other once again. The Tigers have held the edge the past two seasons, but this time, it was the unbeaten Lady Bombers turn to shine.Led by Jade Farquhar's 21 points, 10 rebounds and a tough defense, Palmerton picked up a 62-54 victory to go 3-0 on the season.A 23-point second quarter led by Farquhar with 11 of those points, saw the Bombers go from a four-point first quarter lead, to a 13-point lead at intermission."I thought we did a good job attacking their pressure, whether it was full court or halfcourt in the first half," said Palmerton head coach Rodney Strohl. "We wanted to go at them because their guards are so good out front. We wanted to get the ball to the hoop and make them go long distance even if we didn't score. I thought we had some nice looks with great passes inside, had some nice little easy layups, and when they sagged back on us hit a couple of three-pointers too."The Bombers got a pair of treys from freshman Linnaea Leister off the bench in the first quarter and them Madison Mummey and Farquhar were able to hit from beyond the arc in the second quarter.Leister, who entered the game when Janel Tracy went down with an injury in the third quarter, nailed another three-pointer and finished with 11 points.Mummey scored five of the Bombers 12 points in the third quarter as they kept the Tigers from making a run to take a 51-38 entering the final eight minutes."She (Linnaea) plays with reckless abandon some times and I think no, no, no," said Strohl. "She's learning the game and the nice thing is she's out on the floor with seniors and they're talking to her keeping her calm and relaxed. She did a great job at the end there on (Sabrina) Mertz, playing a senior. I see great potential with the great athleticism that she has."The Tigers used four three-pointers in the final quarter, but had dug too deep a hole and had to foul. The Bombers sank 11-of-14 free throws to hold on."We got off to a slow start," Northwestern Lehigh's Chris Deutsch said. "Palmerton came out and did a real nice job hitting shots. It seemed like every shot they took in the first half was going in."I thought offensively in the first half we were rushing it a little bit taking too quick of a shot. We wanted to push the ball a little bit and I thought it played into their hands. We were a little out of sync offensively in the first half, but our execution was much better in the second half.""My concern tonight was defensively. We gave up 62 points and 39 in the first half. That's not acceptable. We through a lot of different defenses out there, but they just seed to keep making shots."Mummey also hit double digits for the Bombers with 13 points and pulled down eight rebounds .Sarah Segan had 16 points for the Tigers, while Mertz added 13 and Erika Thomas 10.Northwestern did pick up a 44-34 victory in the JV game.NORTHWESTERN LEHIGHStitzel 0-0-0-0, Mertz 4-2-2-13, Landrigan 3-0-0-9, Chisdak 0-0-0-0, Divers 0-0-0-0, Segan 7-1-2-16, Koenig 1-2-2-4, Thomas 2-5-5-10, Anderson 1-0-0-2, Sevrain 0-0-0-0.
