A Lehighton woman, who was called a "career con artist" by the court, was sentenced Friday to a state prison term in Carbon County.

Patricia E. Gadaleta, 54, was sentenced by Judge Joseph J. Matika to serve one to two years in a state correctional institution on a charge of theft by false impression and ruled it run consecutive to a two- to four-year state term she is currently serving on similar type charges, also imposed by Matika.Gadaleta was convicted by a county jury on Sept. 11 to additional counts of receiving stolen property and two bad check charges. The theft and receiving charges are felony threes. Matika merged those two charges for sentencing purposes.Gadaleta was charged by state police at Lehighton in connection with the purchase of two Labrador dogs from Cheri Conway, of Klamath Falls, Ore., with two bad checks.After receiving a complaint from Conway troopers obtained a search warrant for Gadaleta's business, Musket Labradors kennel in Franklin Township, and found the two dogs in question.Gadaleta has been charged in other cases. She has gone on trial on other charges that included theft and related counts concerning the purchase of dogs and identity theft when she opened a credit account using a false name and the identification information of a woman in Florida. She was convicted by a jury in that case.She still has at least two other criminal cases pending in Carbon. She has been in prison since her arrest in 2010.Defense attorney Kent Watkins, Saint Clair, and specially appointed by the court, asked for a concurrent sentence with the one she is now serving.However, Assistant District Attorney Jean A. Engler argued against a concurrent sentence.She said Gadaleta has shown no remorse for what she did and is very good at running cons.Matika agreed telling the defendant, "You have become a career con artist."As in past court proceedings, Gadaleta declined to make any type of statement.The prison term will be followed by one year of probation. On the two bad check counts Matika sentenced her to serve three to 12 months on each concurrent to each other and concurrent to the theft count.Gadaleta was also ordered to get a mental health evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, have no contact with the victim, supply a DNA sample, and make total restitution of $4,015.97. She was given credit for 169 days spent in jail on the charges.Drug countsBrian Eugene Engle Jr., 27, of Shickshinny, Luzerne County, was sentenced to serve six to 12 months in a state prison on a charge of possession of a controlled substance heroin. He previously pleaded guilty to the charge.He was arrested on Nov. 20, 2011, along Broad Street, by Beaver Meadows police after officers had responded to a disturbance involving Engle and another man. During a pat-down police found heroin and drug paraphernalia.On a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia he was sentenced to serve three to six months in a state prison, concurrent with the first count.Matika also ruled that the sentence run consecutive to a three- to six-year prison term on drug counts imposed two weeks ago in Luzerne County.Engle must also get a drug and alcohol (D&A) evaluation, zero tolerance imposed on D&A use and missed urine screens, and render 50 hours of community service when released on parole.DUI caseTheresa Diane Travis, 53, of Weatherly, was sentenced to serve 48 hours to six months in the county prison on a charge of driving under the influence. She previously pleaded guilty to the charge.She was arrested on Feb. 7 along Brenkman Drive in Packer Township by state police at Hazleton. Given a test, the result was .28BAC. She has prior DUI convictions, all were over 10 years ago.She was also ordered to pay a fine of $500, one-year license suspension, zero tolerance on D&A use, and render 25 hours of community service.She will begin the jail term at 8 a.m. on Nov. 29.Each defendant must also pay court costs, which average close to $1,000. Travis must also pay $50 per month supervision fee while on parole.
