Northern Lehigh rejects early retirement plan

For a second straight year, Northern Lehigh School District will not offer an early retirement incentive plan to its eligible professional employees.

The school board, on an 8-0 vote on Monday, rejected the plan, which would have been for all eligible professional employees, on a voluntary basis, for the 2012-13 school year. Director Donna Kulp was absent. That is the same approach the district took in the 2011-12 school year, when it also opted to reject the plan. However, the district was able to offset a then $1.5 million shortfall in the 2010-11 school year with the creation of the plan, which saw 14 teachers agree to be included. The program asked those high-end teachers who accounted for about $111,000 per position to retire and not be replaced, which resulted in a savings of over $1 million in the district's fund balance and long-range plan at that time.As per the program, the teachers received a $25,000 incentive paid into a tax shelter account in two equal amounts of $12,500.One of the major components of that plan was to recommend that the board institute a retirement incentive for all teachers district wide. As a result, the district was able to cut $1,506,000 from its salary and benefits budget at that time.In other business, the board:- Accepted the resignation of Schelene Fritizinger from the her position as part time middle school cook's helper, effective Oct. 10, 2012.- Appointed Dawn Martinez as middle school cook's helper, replacing Fritzinger, at a salary of $8.50 an hour, two hours per day, 180 student days per year, plus additional cleaning days as needed, on the 2009-13 Educational Support Personnel Association Collective Bargaining Agreement, effective today.- Appointed Robert Wetzel as middle school cook's helper, replacing Jennifer Sheridan, who was moved to the high school, at a cost of $8.50 an hour, two hours per day, 180 student days per year, plus additional cleaning days as needed, as per the 2009-13 Educational Support Personnel Association Collective Bargaining Agreement, effective today.- Approved Erin Charnick, Elementary and Special Education, Ricky Guth, Citizenship, and Sarah Miller, Art, as substitute teachers for the 2012-13 school year at the 2012-13 substitute teacher rates as approved on the Supplementary Personnel Salary Schedule.
