Tamaqua woman celebrates 93 years

Mary (Betty) Dolan turned 93 years young recently.

She was born on June 21, 1919 in Tamaqua, the daughter of the late Alex and Evelyn (Herman) Oliver. She still resides in Tamaqua, in a four-generation household, with her daughter Sue, her granddaughter Erica, and her great-grandson, 2-year-old Zakk.Betty holds the honor of being the oldest resident on her street.Betty and her late husband, John, who passed away in April of 1995, also have a son, Terry, who lives in Bethlehem.Betty's other grandchildren include Erin Dolan-Jernegan of Whitehall; Moira Dolan, a student at Drexel University; and Alex Dolan, a student at George Washington University.In addition to Zakk, she has two more great-grandchildren: Leyna Jernegan, 4, and Blake Jernegan, 3.Betty celebrated her special day with family and friends at The Station in Tamaqua, listening to a free concert featuring oldies music. They all joined her back at home for light refreshments.Betty is retired from the Tamaqua Borough Office. Prior to that she owned and operated The Corner Shop, which sold hats and accessories. Earlier than that she was a secretary at Goepart Insurance Agency.Her hobbies include cryptograms, crossword puzzles, gardening and flower arranging. She also enjoys watching wrestling.Betty is a past president of St. Jerome's CWEA; and served as the vice president of the Hometown Garden Club; secretary and vice president of the Tamaqua Garden Club; and secretary and vice president of the Tamaqua Women's Club.She is a member of St. Jerome's Roman Catholic Church.
