Palmerton issues 170 parking tickets following snow storm

Snow shovels weren't the only things Palmerton residents had to break out in light of last weekend's snowstorm.

Mayor Brad Doll informed Borough Council on Thursday that Palmerton Police issued 170 tickets to residents who failed to move their vehicles.Council President Terry Costenbader said he was aware of the situation."I had a few calls on that," Costenbader said. "The south side of the streets were the main problem."Costenbader said he received a complaint from an individual who moved his car back, only to receive a ticket. But, Doll noted that as per the zoning ordinance, residents may not move their cars back over until between 7-8 p.m.Contacted this morning, police Chief Randy Smith told the TIMES NEWS the cost per ticket is $10, if paid within 72 hours. After that, it moves to $25, and if still not paid, a citation goes out, he said.Smith said the fact that so many tickets were handed out in light of the first major snowstorm doesn't come as a surprise."It's that way every year with the first snow fall," Smith said. "People have to realize when there's two inches or more of snow, they have to move their cars."Smith said residents have to be conscientious of the regulations that are in place."Even though the plow went through on your side of the street, you don't move your car back until between 7-8 at night," he said. "It continues for a 48-hour period."In a related matter, Doll said there is a demand for fire policemen. Anyone interested may contact Doll or the borough police department. Also on Thursday, council agreed to readvertise the sale of the vacant lot at 910 Edgemont Avenue.Councilman Randolph Gursky said "several people expressed interest" in the property, which had been abandoned for many years until the borough took over ownership in Nov. of 2011.The borough originally put the property out to bid in August, but received no offers.
