While the streets of Palmerton were quiet under a blanket of fresh snow on Saturday, the Palmerton Area Library was filled with laughter and cheers.

Library Palooza was held at the Palmerton Area Library for local Girl Scouts and families as a chance to have some indoor fun and shake off cabin fever. The event was coordinated by Palmerton area Girl Scout leaders and scouts and the Palmerton Area Library's Teen Advisory Group."We wanted to do something fun for the Girl Scouts during the winter, when there isn't much to do," said Betsy Mattes, leader of Girl Scout Troup 37. "We try to get together as a service unit, all of the troops in the Palmerton area. It's a slow time of year for things to do but it's also a busy time of year for cookie sales."The highlight of the day was a miniature golf course, designed and created by members of the library's Teen Advisory Group. Each hole featured characters, drawings and props from a popular children's book, drawing inspiration from books such as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Alice in Wonderland, and Charlotte's Web. Each green was lined with paperback books.This miniature golf course was designed by the teens over the summer and first used at the Palmerton Community Festival.Scouts from Camp Shady Grove, a day camp for girls based in Palmerton, also offered s'mores and crafts. The Baltimore Life agents offered Safety Smart child identification cards, featuring a photo and electronic fingerprint to be used in case a child goes missing.Other fun offerings included a bean bag toss, "Cookie Twister," food and bake sale, auction, lollipop draw and a "Cookie Rally Station" that offered scouts a chance to review safety lessons before going door to door to sell cookies. Proceeds from the snack stand and bake sale benefited the Palmerton Girl Scout Scholarship Fund, which offers a scholarship to one graduating senior currently in Girl Scouts.Despite the wintery weather, Girl Scouts and members of the community came in groups to enjoy a break from winter boredom. They waited patiently in line for each station, often cheering each other on and chatting about their favorite miniature golf holes.Smiling at the noise, Mattes noted that the event had been a success and that they greatly appreciate the use of the library's space."We utilize the library a lot. It's a convenient location, even when it snows," she said. "We all just want to have a good time. It's all about the girls."Many of the library's employees are current or former scout leaders and also enjoyed seeing the library filled with scouts and laughter."We love scouting and try to promote it to the community," said Palmerton Area Library director Diane Danielson, noting that the Girl Scouts have sleepovers in the library most weekends during the winter. "We have this fabulous building and we like to use it as much as possible."
