Bears pull out dramtic win

BETHLEHEM - Pleasant Valley head coach Mark Getz knew his team would be in for a tough battle in the District 11 Class AAA Duals quarterfinal round against Schuylkill League power Blue Mountain.

It took a decision in the final match of the night to give the Bears a 32-29 win, earning them a 1 o'clock date this afternoon against Parkland in the semifinal round. In the AA semifinals this morning, Bethlehem Catholic and Tri-Valley square off and Saucon Valley and Pen Argyl meet at 11.In the other 3A semifinal, Stroudsburg and Easton will meet at 1 o'clock.Class AAA QuarterfinalsPleasant Vy-Blue Mt.Alex Yanovich scored a 8-0 major decision at 138 to set up a showdown between Pleasant Valley's David Gehr and Blue Mountain's Alex Gosch with the team score tied at 29-29.Gosch was given a point for an escape with 36 seconds left in the second period for a 1-0 lead. Gehr used an escape, takedown and two-point nearfall for the win."When you have three kids out of the lineup, with a stud like Ernie Klingel being one of them, it's hard to win," said Getz. "That was a solid team from top to bottom."When you have a guy like Mike Dahlstrom, who lost and is a real good kid it's hard to pull out victories. It really proved that we have three guys out of our lineup and proves how good we really are."Gehr wrestled solid, with basic moves."He stayed in great position, had great hand fighting and stayed on control the whole match," Getz added.Gehr seemed to get focused when he fell behind."That did motivate me, but I shouldn't have left that happen," Gehr said. "After he got that point, it just made me want to wrestle more and get that point back.Blue Mountain jumped out to a 17-6 lead, but when Tristen Coello suffered an injury default for the Eagles, it started a comeback for the Bears.Mike Benner pulled out a 1-0 decision over Will Rich, Kenny Yanovich followed with a 5:28 fall and Sean Bianco's 16-3 major decision at 113 gave the Bears a 25-17 advantage. The Eagles took a 29-25 lead with three straight wins setting up Yanovich's major decision.Class AA QuarterfinalsPen Argyl-PalmertonPen Argyl won seven of the first eight bouts and the Bombers never recovered giving the Green Knights a 58-9 win."There were a couple of close matches that we could have had, but I don't know if it would have made much of a dent in the team score," said Palmerton head coach Dave Lavin. "We came in here after already wrestling them and we knew with a couple of kids injured it would have been tough to get a win."Kane Kralik picked up his second win this season over Brady Mutton with a 1-0 decision.Kralik beat Mutton in overtime in their regular season match."Even though the score was 1-0, we kind of stuck to our game plan a little bit better this match," Lavine said. "That was the No. 10 and No.11 guys ranked in the state battling there."Sam Oberlander also won by a 1-0 decision over Tyler Knapik."Sam did a good job getting the win," Lavin added. "He was tough on his feet and he stayed offensive."Zach Graver won by a 9-3 decision for the other Bombers' points."Graver capitalized on good positions and put his opponent on his back," Lavin said. "The guys fought hard against a good team. Cody (Grohotolski) wrestled a state champ in Racciato and even though he got caught in the end, he went after him. They've just got to get that mental edge where you've got to just wrestle."Class AA First RoundPalmerton-LehightonPalmerton and Lehighton drew a first round matchup with the Blue Bombers tying a school record for wins with 16 in a season with a 54-20 victory. The match was tied after four bouts, but the Bombers won eight of the final 10 matchups to roll to the win."We had some good matchups, the guys wrestled well," said Palmerton head coach Dave Lavin.Seven of the Bomber wins were by falls as Cody Grohotolski (152), Jake Christman (170), Kane Kralik (220), Josh Evans (113), Sam Oberlander (118), Zack Christman (132) and Joey Bubble (138) all benefitted from putting their opponents on their back.Joe Smith got Lehighton's lone pin."We've struggled all year long filling the lineup and putting guys out on the mat that didn't have a lot of experience," said Lehighton coach Danny Williams. "It's tough. You know they go out and expect them to win, but the experience isn't there. To be able to come here and be part of the duals is really nice. It's a testiment to our experienced guys who went out there and got us bonus points and pins when we were going to need them to get us here."We just have to continue to fill our lineup as we prepare for individual districts now."Catasauqua-No. LehighNorthern Lehigh managed to win three of the first four bouts, but it was Catasauqua the rest of the way as the Roughies scored a 54-21 victory.Dylan Hofmann, Cody Bowman and Kyle Greenawalt gave the Bulldogs a 12-6 advantage before the Roughies went on a run that included seven falls.Ryan Rubio and Ty Herzog picked up the other wins for the Bulldogs."I don't think people understand what these kids did this year, I'm really pround of them," said Nolehi head coach Todd Herzog. "I'm looking at a team that had a lot more talent last year. I've got five brand new kids and bring three freshmen in here and they have the same amount of wins of last year's team and qualified for team districts. We definitely made some progression and they're a good bunch of kids and work hard and it's been a pleasant year."We're just starting the second season so I'm looking forward to the second half."
