All the participants were too young to have experienced Pearl Harbor, but yesterday members of the Lehighton United Veterans Organization paid homage to the event and those who responded.

A Pearl Harbor Day ceremony was staged at the World War II veterans' monument along Sgt. Stanley Hoffman Boulevard (Route 209 South) at the corner of Main Lane.It began at 12:48 p.m., marking the time when the assault on the Hawaiian military base began.Harry Wynn III, UVO member, laid a wreath at the monument which honors Hoffman. The highway was named after Hoffman through a random drawing of the names of Lehighton World War II casualties.Because of a steady rain, there were no speeches this year.Despite the weather conditions, 16 UVO members attended and took part in the event. This included a rifle squad and flag bearers.Bugler David Bryfogle, a Vietnam War veteran, played "Taps."Other veterans taking part besides Wynn and Bryfogle were Glenn Troutman, Gary Beaver, Chuck Weber, Robert Berger, Jack Morgan, Eileen Morgan, Richard Fink, Carl Haydt, Floyd Brown, Sam Armbruster, Jim Zanders, Larry Leslie, Franz Heller, and Kevin Long.Following the program along Sgt. Stanley Hoffman Boulevard, the UVO held a brief program outside the Lehighton VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) Post along South Street.In past years, the Pearl Harbor Day event was followed by a banquet of the Lehighton World War II Last Man's Club at the Lehighton American Legion Post. This year the Last Man's Club didn't hold its event because of too few members healthy enough to attend.It's been 67 years since World War II ended, meaning living veterans are in their mid 80s and older.
