District 14-U rally recognizes outstanding Lions

District 14-U Lions International hosted the District Rally on Sunday at East Penn Social Hall. The event celebrated 32 years of Lionism in 14-U.

PDG Ed Dudley welcomed Lions from District 14-U and began the program where four stations were set up to educate Lions about projects that are close to Lions' hearts.Presenters at the first station were Duane and Lisa Hawk, members of the Bowmanstown-Parryville Lions Club, who are visually challenged. This active and independent couple demonstrated their Leader Dog Personal GPS System which allows them freedom to navigate on foot and to direct a driver to any destination they desire.Karl Jones and Nina Fehnel presented information at the second station about Northeast PA Lions Eyebank which serves 37 counties in Northeast Pennsylvania by procuring, testing, preserving, evaluating and distributing corneal tissue for transplant. Since it was founded in 1957, the eye bank has provided tissue for more than 21,000 people.A third station, manned by Jim Crowley and Hayley Lacombe, challenged Lions to a blind taste test to show how people with sight impairments must rely on their other senses. Their station taught Lions how Beacon Lodge in Mount Union serves children and adults with special needs, including blindness, deafness and other physical and mental challenges.The fourth station was information about Eastern Pa. Area Health Education Center, which helps increase awareness and understanding of low vision eye disorders/disease through the use of simulation goggles. Debra Youngfelt also displayed several adaptive devises that help people with vision problems remain independent.Serving as master of ceremonies was Angela Mimms, vice district governor. She introduced District Governor Scott Dudley and Immediate Past District Governor Robert Kelsey.Dudley recognized all of the Lions Clubs in Region one, two and three, Lioness Clubs and Leo Clubs and also the Beltzville Lions Club which chartered on Sept. 20.Kelsey recognized the clubs and individuals who helped him during his reign as district governor last year. He said that without their help, his year would not have been as successful. He presented certificates of appreciation to each of his Region Chairs and Cabinet officers.Kelsey recognized Bob Silliman with the Secretary Excellence Award and Pocono Lions Club with the Club Excellence Award. He also recognized Linda Benner for her service as Youth Chairman. Kelsey then presented the Lioness of the Year Award to Nancy DaCosta and then called her forward a second time to present her with a Melvin Jones Fellowship Award, the highest award in Lionism.
