The free evening of swimming, food, and activities is sponsored by Lehighton Area School District Title One Department and Lehighton Baer Memorial Swimming Pool."Our basic premise is 'reaching together and beyond for children's education and safety' - with the goal of bridging the gap between the school and community by providing a free educational / safety awareness program, "said Suzanne Howland, Response to Instruction and Intervention Teacher for Lehighton Area School District. She said free hot dogs, snacks, and drinks will be provided to all who attend. Members of Lehighton Borough Council and Lehighton Area School Board - as well as LASD administrators - are scheduled to grill the hot dogs. This event is open to all children and families in the Lehighton school district.Students in grades kindergarten through eighth grade must be accompanied by an adult. Otherwise, they will not be permitted to participate in the event.Children and families will be able to swim for the evening, while parents are encouraged to circulate among the stations throughout the pool grounds. When parents have completed all stations, they will have the opportunity to win free raffle items which have been donated by local businesses and school organizations.Approximately 20 agencies helped to educate the community at last year's inaugural event. Stations included early intervention services, occupational therapy services, preschool information, water safety/rescue, bike safety, sunscreen awareness, suicide prevention, nutrition, self-defense, and how to maintain academic levels in all children throughout the summer. This year, 28 participants are scheduled to provide information to the community. Among them are PennStar Helicopter, Franklin Township Fire Company, and Pennsylvania State Police for child identification cards and fingerprinting. Music will be provided by "The Doctor" from Penn's Peak Radio.Rain date for this Lehighton community event is Friday, June 17 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
