Powell, Carroll win 2 Saints Scamper

Anthony Powell of Lansford of Amber Carroll of Tamaqua were the top overall finishers in the 12th annual 2 Saints Scamper in Summit Hill, Saturday.

The event is sponsored by St. Joseph's Church of Summit Hill and is a prelude to the annual St. Joseph's Festival, which will be held Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.There were a total of 55 participants in his year's event, which is a 5k (3.1 miles) running and walking race.Two of the participants were accompanied by pet dogs.Powell, 19, a Panther Valley High School graduate who is a junior at Misericordia University, had last competed in the scamper two years ago and finished in second place.In Saturday's event, he finished in a time of 20:55, which was 17 seconds ahead of Glenn Goldberg, who had won the 40-44 year old competition.At Panther Valley, Powell was on the cross-country team for three years and the track team for four years. He runs cross country at Misericordia.This was Carroll's first 2 Saints Scamper. She was the first female to complete the course in 21:43, and fifth overall finisher.Carroll, 17, will be a senior in September at Tamaqua Area High School. She is on the high school track team and has won state championships for long-distance running in track.One of the entries was Bobby O'Gurek of Summit Hill, who completed the course in a motorized wheel chair.Chairing the event were Nathan and Christen Halenar.Rich Gilbert was the official starter.Summit Hill Fire Police provided traffic control at various intersections.Also assisting was the Summit Hill Police Department.The results are as follows:Overall - Male, Anthony Powell (20:55), female, Amber Carroll (21:43).14 and under - Male: 1.
