Car plunges, motorist escapes injury

An elderly motorist escaped injury Saturday afternoon after his car left SR443 in Mahoning Township and ended up down an embankment. The incident began as the victim was traveling east just east of the intersection with Springhouse Road when for some unknown reason his car swerved to the right, entered the right berm just missing a set of guardrails and going down an embankment coming to rest in heavy brush. Members of the Mahoning Valley Fire Company, Mahoning Valley ambulance and Lehighton paramedics worked to free the driver and carry him back up to the road surface with the use of a stokes basket. He was evaluated and transported to an area hospital. State police at Lehighton are investigating the incident.
