Education and safety program

More than two dozen organizations will participate in the first Lehighton School and Community Educational/Safety Program at the Baer Memorial Swimming Pool, Lehighton.

The free event is scheduled from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, with a rain date of June 24.The Educational/Safety program was planned by Sue Holland and Patty Everrett.A combination of groups and organizations from the borough, school district, and the county along with state and local police will be participating.There will be free food including hot dogs, snacks, and drinks.Swimming will be free but children must be accompanied by an adult.The educational and safety program is a kindergarten through 12th grade event.Title 1 math and reading teachers will provide families with fun "make and take learning activities."John Wagner, Lehighton borough manager, said the borough council will be grilling the hot dogs and has invited school board members and administrators to join them.The Pennsylvania State Police will be on hand to photograph and fingerprint all school-aged children. Parents will be given a "Fot-O-Kid ID."The Lehighton Police Department will have a program on bike safety and give a demonstration on the "coconut crusher," which illustrates the importance of wearing a helmet when riding a bike.The police also will give away about 800 cable gun locks.A free check of infant and toddler car seats will be administered by the Carbon County Safe Kids in the pool parking lot.John Kuller, fire chief, said the fire department's water rescue team will demonstrate a water rescue and provide safety tips.Lehighton PTO, Lehighton Memorial Library, Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit 21 Occupational Therapy, St Matthew's Pre-School, and the Lehighton Area School District's Safe School Ambassador's Program will all be represented.There will also be a karate demonstration by Mountain Karate Academy.Other groups taking part are Carbon-Monroe-Pike Mental Health/Mental Retardation, Carbon County Realtors, Family Promise, Carbon County Cancer Society, Pool Pals, the Bo Tkach Foundation, Lehighton Life Guards, Carbon County Drug and Alcohol Organization, Early Car and Education Community Engagement Group, Lehighton Cheerleaders, and Lehighton community businesses."The Doc," Layne Roberts from Penn's Peak Radio, will provide music for the event.
