Stimulus jobs

If you happened to watch the ABC national news on Tuesday night while waiting for the big snowstorm to arrive, it's a good bet your blood started boiling long before you had to don your boots and parka and head for the outdoors and the snow shovel.

The current administration has been endorsing the creation of green jobs, positions that will create employment while at the same time help the environment.Billions of dollars in stimulus money has gone to subsidize such endeavors. It's creating jobs, all right. But, get this. The jobs aren't being created here in the U.S. where unemployment figures hover around 10 percent. Many of the green jobs are going to China, ABC reported. The creation of wind farms, enough to power 2.4 million homes in the U. S., are being built in such places as Texas. Hundreds of giant turbines are being erected 40 stories high to capture the wind and turn it into useful energy. Each turbine costs about $3 million to manufacture. But, according to ABC, 80 percent of them are being built overseas, in China, and not in the

U.S.A.What's wrong with this picture?Sen. Charles Schumer is infuriated."This is not the way it was supposed to be," he lamented. And he's pushing for legislation to change the practice. But, according to the news report, there is nothing in the Recovery Act requiring that the turbines be made in the United States. So off to China they go.And the administration refuses to recognize that there's a problem with this program. Our stimulus money, creating more than 2,000 manufacturing jobs, and costing us $450 million, will never see the pockets of an American citizen. But the Chinese will prosper.A wind farm being built in Texas will employ thousands, but only a small percentage of those jobs will be for Americans. The rest will go to the workers who built the turbines, in China, and shipped them to our shores. The current administration has plunged us trillions of dollars into debt. We owe so much money to China, it doesn't appear that we will ever escape their grasp. The creation of green energy jobs in the Recovery Act was supposed to benefit Americans, both in the jobs market and in the environment. The stimulus package was never intended to be shipped out to foreign countries. The jobs were supposed to stay here, in American families, so they could provide for their families. Americans were made to believe that is how we're going to turn this economy around. So where did we go wrong? It's a question the administration must address. It's time to stimulate our economy. Let China handle their own. What's happening now doesn't make any sense at all.Bob Urbanrurban@tnonline.com
