Summit Hill man facing DUI after fleeing police

A Carbon County man is facing multiple counts following an incident that occurred on Aug. 18.

Summit Hill police said at 6:46 p.m. officers observed a white Ford Focus fail to stop for a posted stop sign at Hazard and Market streets.

Police attempted to stop the driver by activating the emergency lights and siren on the patrol vehicle. The driver failed to stop and fled. The driver failed to stop for another stop sign at Hazard and Walnut streets. The pursuit continued onto South Poplar Street, at which time the driver lost control and struck another vehicle, which was in the process of being parked. The two occupants in that vehicle suffered injuries and needed medical attention.

At this point, two male passengers in the Focus exited the vehicle and ran off, but the driver remained at the scene.

He was identified as Ethan Vermillion, 22, of the 200 block of South Chestnut Street, Summit Hill. He was taken into custody and transported to the police station, where he declined to make a statement. Officers detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from Vermillion’s breath and noted that his eyes were red and glassy. Vermillion failed field sobriety tests and submitted to a blood draw. The result was 0.21 BAC.

As a result, Vermillion has been charged with two counts each of driving under the influence of alcohol or controlled substance, recklessly endangering another person and duties at stop signs, and one count each of accidents involving damage to attended vehicle or property, careless driving and reckless driving.
