Lansford Alive conducts sign installation and fall cleanup

Lansford Alive conducted its annual fall cleanup as well as a new sign installation last Saturday.

Carbon County Juvenile Probation participated in the cleanup, with their supervisor stepping in to assist the children in their efforts. A few people from the town also showed up to help.

Lansford Councilman Bob Silver commented on the cleanup.

“We don’t get a lot of people coming out, like the old days,” he said.

Kennedy Park was intended to be the start of the cleanup, but residents have kept the park mostly clean, aside from a few cigarettes and cigarette boxes. The cleanup participants moved on to clean the surrounding areas.

The signs installed were at Kennedy Park and near the Lansford Pool entrance.

Lansford plans to fix the town pool.

The plan was to rebuild the pool, Silver said. But there aren’t enough funds to do that. So now they are working on collecting the funds to just fix it.

Lansford received a $35,000 gaming grant from the state to help fix the pool. The rest of the funds are important to collect before they get started.

“It’s a shame, because our kids have nowhere to swim,” Silver said.

As for the sign installations, B.J. and Seth Berk, volunteers with Lansford Alive, showed up with the equipment necessary to complete the job. Christopher Ondrus, president of Lansford Alive, and Coaldale resident Anyssa Hernandez also helped in the process.

Another resident brought extra tools.

They used a post hole digger to create the holes in the ground for the poles, but they had to probe the land to find a place that allowed for a deep enough hole.

The men mixed concrete, and set the poles up in the correct spots, both at the park and the pool.

The signs were not attached until the following day due to the poles needing more time to set.
