Hahn takes over PV boys hoop program

Coaching basketball runs deep into Bobby Hahn’s family.

His dad served as a coach and took him to high school games during his childhood.

After serving six years as an assistant at Lehighton, the younger Hahn accepted the head coaching position at Pleasant Valley — his first head coaching job.

“I wanted to be a high school basketball coach and just a basketball coach in general my whole life,” Hahn said. “It was something that I always liked to do. I just really grew up with a love for basketball. I love playing the game, but I knew that my career was not going to go too far as a player because of my lack of height.

“I’m only 5-6, and I figured the only way to go was to get into coaching and stay with it. I love teaching the game, I love being around the game. I love having players and developing players and really working with them. The situation just worked out right. There was a job opening, and I was fortunate enough that Pleasant Valley hired me for it. I’m really excited for the season to begin.”

Hahn takes over a Bears’ program that finished the 2017-18 season with an 11-12 record and lost to Emmaus in the opening round of the District 11 Class 6A playoffs.

This year’s program will feature an array of changes to the team. Andrius Harrison-Gaddist is the only returner from last season’s squad, as he averaged 8.9 points a game.

Hahn will see many different faces on the team, and has integrated a new system in his first season.

“If I had to sum up my philosophy and my system, I would say it would be assists are really the key thing in a game,” Hahn said. “Ball movement is what really wins games. Having a teamwork and really sharing the ball is what I’m trying to instill in the minds of these players.

“Drive, kick and move the ball around. I’m really trying to get them to think pass first and create for their teammates.”

Hahn is still working on getting his starting lineup and rotation set, and noted it might take a few games until the lineup is settled.

“We have a lot of guys battling for a lot of spots,” Hahn said. “A lot of similar talent, and it’s kind of going to be interesting to see which kids step up and take that role as one of the main guys. I could see our team going deep to the bench this year and having a lot of guys that could come in and play a nice role.

“With over half my team from soccer and football, there’s a lot of guys that I haven’t really seen a whole lot of yet, so it’s kind of tough to tell which guys are going to be the ones to watch.”

Hahn’s team opens its season at home against EPC rival Pocono Mountain East on Tuesday.

He talked about how he’s going to take things early in the season.

“I’m not originally from Pleasant Valley, so I know they have the rivalry games and stuff there,” Hahn said. “It’s easier for me to kind of take a step back to go one game at a time.

“I’m going to see what I can do to scout and get the information on these teams, and we’re going to work on it on practice and do the best we can to prepare.”
