Four TN area volleyball players honored

Panther Valley’s volleyball team had an incredible season, winning District 11 and Schuylkill League titles and advancing to the quarterfinal round of the PIAA Class 2A tournament.

The Panthers celebrated another accomplishment recently when the Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association announced its 2018 all-state teams for the Class A, AA and AAA levels.

Panther Valley placed two players on the Class 2A squad, Jenna Dubosky and Olivia Dacey, who were recognized by the PVCA for their contributions during the season.

It was Dubosky’s second straight selection, while Dacey earned her first appearance on the team.

“It means a lot,” said Panthers’ head coach Nancy Filer. “They work hard for what they get. It’s an honor, and it’s amazing that two of them made it.

“They have the ability, and they have the team to play with.”

In addition to Dubosky and Dacey, Jim Thorpe’s Kelsey Carroll was also selected to the Class 2A squad, while Marian’s Alivia Karchner was tabbed for the Class A team.

Dubosky and Dacey helped Panther Valley capture its third straight district title.

Dubosky had 256 kills this season and has 575 for her career, while also dishing out 410 assists and amassing 734 over the past three seasons. Dubosky also had 273 service points (631 career) and 94 aces (201 career).

Dacey collected 270 kills (423 career) and 385 digs this past season (623 career). The junior also had 137 service points (318 career) and 27 aces (66 career).

“It was a great season,” said Filer. “They played well together. It was fun watching them.”

Carroll enjoyed a stellar season as the Olympians reached the District 11 Class 2A title game.

The senior’s season included 70 aces (282 career), 151 kills (375 career), 212 digs (830 career), and 235 assists (1,309 career). She was named a Schuylkill League Division 2 First Team All-Star the past three years, and has landed on the District 11 Class 2A First Team the past three seasons.

Carroll, who was the team’s head captain this past season, holds the record for most assists in Jim Thorpe history.

“Kelsey puts in her time in the offseason, in the winter, our preseason. She’s going to do whatever it takes to make sure she is playing to the best of her ability,” said Olympians’ head coach Victoria Nichols. “When I put her, as a quiet, shy freshman starting varsity as the setter her first year, it was culture shock, because she doesn’t want to fail. And she never failed.

“She’s prospered, and every game she’s gotten better. Every season, she got better; every club season. She’s such a coachable kid. She transitioned from just our setter to being our setter and she accepted the change in the rotation. She was such a versatile player that she was helping the girls on the court. She’s such a team player. Anything we asked her to do, she does it willingly.”

Karchner helped the Fillies reach the semifinals of the District 11 Class A tournament.

“She works hard. She’s a good kid,” said Marian head coach John “Doc” Fallabel. “She’s a really nice kid, and she works as hard as she can, and she’ll only get better.”

Karchner led the Fillies in kills and blocks this past season as a sophomore.
