Carbon County court

A Lehighton man was sentenced on Tuesday in five criminal cases in Carbon County court.

He was one of two defendants who previously pleaded guilty and were sentenced by Judge Steven R. Serfass.

Drug counts

Kyle Schoenberger

, 24, was sentenced on four counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, two counts of driving under suspension-DUI related, and one count of driving under the influence of a controlled substance.

The arrests for the paraphernalia counts occurred on March 24, April 15, May 7 and Oct. 10, 2016, following traffic stops by state police at Lehighton and Mahoning Township police. The DUI occurred on the May 7 stop by state police along Bridge Street in Lehighton. One suspension count was the May 7 incident and the second on Oct. 10.

On the DUI charge he was sentenced to serve 72 hours to six months in jail, a fine of $1,000 and one-year license suspension. He was given credit for 72 hours already served and parole. On the two driving under suspension counts, he was fined a total of $400.

On the drug counts he was placed on probation for a total of two years consecutive to the DUI charge.

Serfass also ordered him to render a total of 125 hours of community service.

Other case

Shannon P. Steigerwalt

, 41, of Weissport, was sentenced to serve one to 12 months on two counts of simple assault with the terms running concurrently. On a DUI charge he was placed on probation for six months and fined $300. He was also ordered to get a mental health evaluation and render 100 hours of community service.

He was arrested by state police at Lehighton on April 5, 2017, after entering a home on the 200 block of White Street in Weissport and assaulting the resident. The victim sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene. He was given credit for 161 days spent in a Salvation Army rehabilitation program and paroled.

Both defendants must also pay court costs of about $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole or probation.
