A Luzerne County man was sentenced to a state prison term on Friday in Carbon County court after previously admitting he stole from his father.

Joseph Jermone Hornick III, 30, formerly of Beaver Meadows and now of Hazleton, was sentenced by President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II to serve 18 to 60 months in a state correctional institution on a charge of theft, as felony 2.

Hornick admitted removing three guns, boxes of ammunition, a camera, two bicycles and prescription medication from his father, Joseph Hornick Jr., of Berwick Street, Beaver Meadows. The incident was reported on Dec. 24, 2016.

At the time of his guilty plea, Hornick told the court he stole to feed a drug addiction. He said he started on painkillers, which he was prescribed after being in a crash. He also has mental health issues.

Hornick has pending charges in Luzerne County and is serving a sentence in Bucks County.

Nanovic ordered him to get both drug and alcohol and mental health evaluations and follow any recommendations for treatment, supply an DNA sample, pay court costs of about $1,000 and make restitution to his father totaling $16,316.

The prison term runs concurrent with the Bucks County sentence.

Jewelry theft

Debby A. Hawkey, 40, of Allentown, was given a short jail after previously pleading guilty to a charge of receiving stolen property.

She was charged by state police at Fern Ridge for her part in the theft of two diamond rings from a residence along Arapahoe Road in Penn Forest Township on Nov. 19, 2016.

Nanovic sentenced her to serve 30 days to 18 months in prison on the charge with credit for 36 days already served and paroled her.

Hawkey admitted to an addiction problem but said she had been getting counseling and has been “clean” for 13 months.

Nanovic also ordered her to get both drug and alcohol and mental health counseling and attend and complete parenting classes. She must also pay court costs of about $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole.
