Dog attacks, kills owner in Lehigh

A dog attacked and killed its owner Thursday in Lehigh County.

Upper Macungie Township police said a male, 3½-year-old boxer-pit bull mix attacked his female owner at 1:28 p.m. She later died at the Lehigh Valley Hospital - Cedar Crest.According to police, officers responded to a residence in the area of Spring White Drive for a report of a dog attacking a person.Upon arrival, officers encountered the dog attacking a woman on the rear deck of the residence.Officers approached the dog and victim and secured the animal. The woman, who sustained severe injuries, was taken to LVH by Cetronia ambulance, where she was pronounced dead. The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin.Police determined the dog belonged to the victim.Police called state dog warden Orlando Aguire to the scene along with representatives from the Lehigh County Humane Society.Police said Aguire took the dog to the human society, where it will be euthanized. The dog will then be sent for testing in an attempt to determine a cause of the attack.The case remains under investigation, police said.The county coroner's office is assisting.
