Schuylkill crash, car catches fire

State police at Schuylkill Haven reported investigating a one-vehicle crash and also an incident where a car caught fire, both occurring along Schuylkill County roads over the weekend.

The car fire incident occurred about 5 p.m. on Friday, April 4, along Middle Road in Barry Township. Troopers said Thomas R. Klinger, 49, of Ashland, was driving a 2002 Saturn L200 westbound when a fire started in the front passenger side compartment, causing the vehicle to become disabled. Klinger managed to exit the vehicle unharmed. The fire was extinguished by Hegins Fire Company volunteers.The crash was reported at 6:50 a.m. on Saturday, April 5, along Route 61 near Chestnut Ridge Drive in Deer Lake borough.Troopers said Emmett J. Ackerman, 30, of Danville, was driving a 1994 Acura Integra northbound when he crossed the fog line and struck the guide rail along the berm. After impact, he drove over the guide rail and continued northbound along the berm. The car came to rest about 40 yards north of the initial point of impact.Ackerman was not injured but the car had to be towed from the scene. He was cited for the incident.
