Police capture man after crash, 2-hour search

A Scranton man was scheduled to be arraigned today in Carbon County on charges of fleeing or attempting to elude police, accidents involving an attended vehicle and driving while under suspension, following an incident Thursday night in Franklin Township.

Township police were joined by troopers from the Pennsylvania State Police, the department's K-9 and helicopter units and municipal police from Kidder and Mahoning townships and Palmerton borough in a search for the man that lasted about two hours before he was caught around 10:15 p.m.Danny Gonzalez, 43, was held in the Carbon County Correctional Facility in Nesquehoning, after being taken into custody, according to Officer Frank Lorah of the Franklin Township Police Department, the arresting officer. Gonzalez was arraigned today before Magisterial District Justice William Kissner of Palmerton. The search for him started around 7:30 and came about an hour after he was involved in a hit-and-run incident.Lorah said Chief Tom Beltz was summoned to investigate that crash at 6:17 after a vehicle believed to be operated by Gonzalez ran a stop sign and struck a vehicle operated by an unidentified woman before fleeing the scene. No one was hurt in the crash, Lorah said.He said he spotted a blue Chrysler van operated by Gonzales at about 7:30 traveling west on Pohopoco Drive. The van has visible damages consistent with the hit-and-run incident, the officer said. After turning around and activating the police cruiser's lights, Lorah chased Gonzalez for about a mile, after which time he pulled the car to the left of the road, got out and ran into the woods. Lorah said a short foot pursuit followed until the man disappeared. The officer said other police departments responded to assist, as did state police, who brought their K-9 dog to the scene.Lorah said the dog picked up the man's scent and tracked it for about a half-mile, at which time the state police helicopter crew and officers made visual contact with the runaway man.Gonazlez was finally taken into custody in the Saw Mill Creek area near the Army Corps of Engineers site near Beltzville. In addition to the criminal violations Gonzalez faces, he will be cited for numerous summary traffic offenses. The Franklin Township Volunteer Fire Company assisted at the scene. Lorah said the company's lighting equipment and infrared cameras were of great assistance to police in the capture.
