It was a ducky situation for state police at Schuylkill Haven after the crash of a tractor-trailer rig resulted in thousands of ducks being released on a county road and nearby property. The incident occurred about 5:04 a.m. on Tuesday, May 10, in the area of 317 Main St., in Porter Township, and involved damage to eight parked vehicles.

Troopers said Jacob L. Kessler Jr., 44, of Hamburg, was operating a 2004 Freightliner with trailer southbound in the vicinity of Derps Service Center. He was traveling at a speed that was unsafe for conditons and rounding a curve, troopers said. After rounding the curve the trailer tipped over in front of the service station. When the trailer turned onto the passenger side it struck a 1997 Ford Escort and 2001 Ford Focus at the service center.The rig continued traveling south and struck a 1992 Ford F Super Duty pickup truck and then hit a Plymouth Neon, which spun clockwise upon impact into the passenger side of a 1998 Ford Contour which was also parked at the service center. The Contour was then pushed into a 1994 Chevrolet 2500 truck which in turn sturuck a 1998 Plymouth Voyager on the front end. The Voyager then struck a 1986 GMC Sierra 3500 truck with the passenger side rear.After the rig finally came to rest about 5,000 live ducks were either thrown from the trailer or escaped on their own, troopers said.Kessler and his passengers, Victor Vasquez, 26, and Cesar Yuval Grajalva Mendez, 29, both of Reading, were all not injuredThe road was closed for about eight hours until crews cleaned up the wreckage and attempts were made to capture the ducks that survived the crash. Troopers estimated half of the duck cargo survived.
