Former pro wrestler gets prison term in indecent assault

A former pro wrestler was given a Carbon County prison term on Thursday on a charge of indecent assault.

Charles David Shafer, 28, of Bethlehem, was sentenced by Judge Joseph J. Matika to serve 6 to 12 months in prison on the charge. He previously pleaded guilty to the charge and also to two counts of retail thefts for incidents at the Walmart and Giant Market stores in Mahoning Township. On the two theft counts he was placed on probation for a total of two years, consecutive to the assault charge.Shafer told Matika he got addicted to crack cocaine and said "it ruined my marriage and relationship with my kids."Shafer said he was using drugs when he was a pro wrestler performing for benefits throughout the area. He has since given up that profession. He added, "I take full responsibility for my crimes."He said he stole to get drugs and ignored his family in the process.Concerning the indecent assault charge, Lehighton police filed the charges for an incident on Jan. 4, 2015. He admitted inappropriately touching a female, who was in her 20s, in a vehicle in the lower park area of the borough. The theft incidents occurred when he was an employee of Walmart.Because the assault count comes under the provisions of Megan's Law, Shafer must register for the next 15 years as a sexual offender. An assessment by the state sexual assessment board determined that Shafer was not a sexually violent predator.Matika also ordered Shafer to make total restitution for the thefts $1,564.46, render a total of 150 hours of community service when released on parole, supply a DNA sample, get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, zero tolerance for drug and alcohol, pay court costs of about $1,000, pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole or probation, and have no contact with the victim in the assault case.
