Lansford man dies after sleeping in car

Alcohol and frigid temperatures most likely caused the death of a 49-year-old Lansford Marine Corps veteran who died after sleeping in his car Friday night into Saturday.

Lansford Police Officer Brian Horos on Monday said Alan J. Kurtz, of 322 W. Front Street, was found by his wife at about 9:30 a.m. Saturday. Kurtz had allegedly been drinking, and, wearing a jacket and a blanket, slept in the car.Temperatures plunged to around zero overnight Friday.The Carbon County District Attorney's office and borough Detective Jack Soberick are investigating the death, Horos said.Kurtz was taken to St. Luke's Miners Memorial Hospital in neighboring Coaldale, where he died several hours later.Kurtz had served with the U.S. Marine Corps for 10 years during Operation Desert Storm.A full obituary on the victim appears on Page 4 of today's TIMES NEWS.
