No tax increase for West Penn Township residents

West Penn Township property owners can breathe a sigh of relief: There will be no tax increase next year.

Supervisors on Tuesday adopted a balanced $1,932,239 spending plan that keeps the tax rate at 4.75 mills. That means the owner of a home whose taxable value is $25,000 would continue to pay $118.75 in real estate tax next year.At that rate, the township anticipates collecting a total of $544,573 in real estate tax revenue. Each mill is expected to generate about $114,646. The millage breaks down to 4.50 mills for the general fund and .25 for fire protection.Other levies include a $5 annual per capita tax, a 0.5 percent Earned Income tax, a $5 annual Occupational Privilege Tax and a 0.5 percent Real Estate Transfer Tax.The township anticipates an uptick in subdivision related and zoning hearing fees, with the subdivision fees rising from $1,500 to $2,200 and the zoning hearing fees rising from $1,000 to $2,500.Supervisors also signed a new three-year police contract covering the township's three full-time and three part-time officers, all of whom received a 3 percent salary increase. In other matters, supervisors designated 709.63 additional acres as agricultural security, bringing the total to 14,059.462 acres throughout the township. The new acres are mostly in the New Ringgold area. Farms are accepted into the program every seven years.Accepted on Tuesday were properties owned by Dennis and Nancy D'Angelo; Bella Terra Farm; Robert Birdsall; Keith Zimmerman; Kathy Zimmerman; Photo Mountain Farm; Gary and Deborah Coles and William and Barbara Germain, all of New Ringgold; and Randy Clemson and Jacquelyn Zehner of Tamaqua.
