Recycling saves money; the state mandated sprinkler system requirement will cost money; and Monroe County Citizens Against Regulatory Excess, or Monroe CARE, hopes to save time and money. These were the major items during Monday's meeting of the Polk Township Board of Supervisors.

For every ton of solid waste material not needing to be land-filled but recycled instead, the township saves $73 reported Secretary/Treasurer Nancy May and also earns money from the sale of said recyclables.That keeps cost lower for residents since "more recyclables means more income."More costs is what builders of single family homes will be faced with when the Sprinkler System Requirement becomes law as of Jan. 1, 2011 reported Zoning/Codes Officer Gerald Zurat. He estimates the cost at between $5,000 and $12,000. Supervisor Michael Hurley said, "It's about $20,000."A representative for Monroe County Citizens Against Regulatory Excess (CARE), R.J Starrett, spoke about the organization's mission and what it hopes to do. Citing two examples of area businesses and the cost those businesses have engendered in order to build a new facility, though not yet built after thousands of dollars and several years of time, CARE is hoping to create a binding review process, to make that process more efficient."We want to manage growth more efficiently," said Starrett, having said that the current ways prohibit jobs and growth.Starrett cited two states, including North Carolina, where a Uniform Construction Code is in place and detailed how that works.The group is non-partisan said he and suggested the CARE web site, at monroecare.org could be reviewed.Having made sure no financial liability was involved in voting to renew support of PA's Growing Greener, the board voted 3-0 to do just that.They also voted 3-0 to approve the plan revision for new development plan for Camp Harlam, conditional upon clarification of who the title holder(s) are. They also voted 3-0 to purchase two recapped tires for township trucks.The next meet for the Board of Supervisors is Monday, Dec. 27.
