Snitzer leads Shenandoah over Weatherly

It might be the worst kept secret in the Schuylkill League, but the key to stopping Shenandoah Valley is to contain junior forward Abigail Snitzer.

For 29 minutes of last night's Division III contest, Weatherly did just that. However, as the Wreckers would quickly find out, if you let you guard down for just a split second or in this case 143 seconds Snitzer will make you pay as she led Shenandoah to a 56-36 victory.Snitzer, who entered the contest averaging 17.3 points per game, was held scoreless for the first twelve and a half minutes of the game, as Weatherly found itself trailing by just seven points (19-12) with 3:35 remaining in the first half. Snitzer's first field goal finally came with 3:19 showing on the clock and what happened next was pure dominance.Over the span of the next two minutes, Snitzer hit 6-of-7 shots for 15 points as she single-handedly propelled the Lady Devils on a 15-3 run to extend the lead to 34-15."She's seeing a lot of attention from teams this year, and with that, she's learning to keep her composure when it's not there," stated Shenandoah Valley head coach Chris Conroy. "As you saw tonight, she's capable of going off just like that. I was proud of her that she didn't get too erratic when things weren't going her way early and she just let the game come to her."Weatherly built a 5-2 lead early on and took advantage of the Lady Devils (3-2, 2-2) missing nine of their first 10 shots from the floor. However, Shenandoah went on a 14-0 run when the Wreckers went in an 0-for-14 shooting slump."I thought our specialty defense that we invented for this team was very effective but I think I might have pulled the trigger too soon on getting out of it," stated first year Weatherly head coach Will Frantz. "When we started to fall behind, I went to a pressure high-tempo scheme to try to generate some points, but that only caused us to fall further behind. They never really solved some of the matchup defenses we threw at them, but we got out of it too early which was probably my fault."The Wreckers went back to their specialty defense and outscored the Blue Devils 11-9 in the third quarter as Shenandoah only converted four of its 24 shot attempts.Weatherly would eventually trim the deficit to 13 points (49-36) with three minutes left in the game, but the Blue Devils scored the final seven points of the contest."We got a late start to the season but I'm finally starting to learn our team's identity," added Frantz. "We seem to do better playing power basketball so I'm going to refocus our energy to utilize our inside talent and pound the ball more."For Weatherly (0-3, 0-3), Courtney Lovett had eight points and 10 boardsSHENANDOAH VALLEYDenalis 0-0-0-0, Nieddu 1-8-10-10, Dove 0-0-0-0, Florio 0-0-0-0, Jones 1-0-0-3, Buchanan 2-2-4-6, Creasy 7-3-4-18, Snitzer 6-5-7-19.
