North Schuylkill matmen top Tamaqua
Talent and depth, two key elements for any successful team and typically a winning combination no matter the sport.
And the North Schuylkill wrestling team has certainly experienced its share of winning this season. After claiming the title at the Anthracite Duals this past Saturday, the Spartans (13-1) took advantage of several Tamaqua forfeits en route to a 55-20 Schuylkill League win over the Raiders.North Schuylkill won 10 of the 14 bouts, six by forfeit, which cost Tamaqua 36 points in the match. But the Spartans remained sharp in their matches that were contested, something coach Chris Edwards made sure of."A Schuylkill League win is a Schuylkill League win, and that was our first one," he said. "It's difficult to keep the kids up when they know we're getting six forfeits. But we had to keep our heads up on the bench and we were able to get through tonight with a really big win."And when Tamaqua won, it won big.The Raiders got dominant performances in their wins, as Colin Mashack (126) and Tanner McHugh (113) each picked up technical falls while Dylan Rynkiewicz (132) earned a pin and Adam Toth (152) claimed a major decision.Even in defeat, the Raiders (1-11) forced North Schuylkill to work for all three periods, giving up only two pins and surrendering only one major decision, a match Tamaqua's Collin Moyer trailed by a slim 2-0 margin after two rounds before falling 9-0.Despite the loss, it's that kind of effort that has Tamaqua coach Jon Mashack excited with the progress his squad has made to this point in the season."As a whole, I think we wrestled well as a team," the coach said. "Some guys that were a little bit too tentative earlier in the season were a lot more aggressive tonight and looking to score points right until the last second."That's a start and that's something to build on. We can work with those characteristics. Overall, I'm very happy with the matches we had against a very solid North Schuylkill team."While depth may limit what Tamaqua can accomplish in terms of team success, the Raiders certainly have talent on their roster.Mashack (10-1), McHugh (13-4) and Rynkiewicz (14-2) have all impressed so far this season and could be primed for deep postseason runs if their early season success continues."We just have to make sure they keep working hard and have the right mindset," the coach said. "We might not make a lot of noise as a team this year, but individually, they need to keep working to make sure they keep improving as we get closer to the end of the year."For Edwards and a Spartans squad riding a wave of momentum, the goals are slightly different and not too far down the road."We have Shamokin on Saturday, Pine Grove next Wednesday and then the Schuylkill League Tournament, and that's where we want to make some noise," Edwards said. "We're 13-1 right now and our goal is to go into that tournament 15-1 and come out champions."North Schuylkill 55, Tamaqua 20106 - Mason Madden-Edwards (NS) won by forfeit113 - Tanner McHugh (T) tech. fall Owen Boyer, 16-0 (4:46)120 - Shane McGrath (NS) won by forfeit126 - Colin Mashack (T) tech. fall Jess Wetzel, 17-2 (4:06)132 - Dylan Rynkiewicz (T) pinned Ricky Elliott in 2:39138 - Tyler Budnavage (NS) pinned Dustin Silkowski in 1:50145 - Joe Alexander (NS) dec.
