Kubishin leads Colts into playoffs

Take a minute and ask yourself a question - Who is Nick Kubishin?

If you don't know, you're probably not alone. After all, the Marian sophomore had only played limited minutes in six games all season long.Statistically, he hadn't even scored a point at the varsity level. However, after last night, everyone knows the name Nick Kubishin.Kubishin came off the bench midway through the first quarter and led Marian with a game-high 17 points, including five three-pointers.And in what can be considered his biggest contribution, he led his team into the District 11 Class A playoffs with a must win 44-32 Schuylkill League Division 3 victory over Weatherly. The victory advances Marian (9-12 overall, 7-6 league) into the postseason for the ninth straight year."We've been preaching to the kids about the 'window of opportunity' and every league victory helps that window stay open just a little bit longer," stated Marian head coach John Patton. "If you win tonight, the window remains open and you move on. If you don't win, the window slams shut on your season."For Marian, the proverbial "window" looked broken early as Weatherly stormed out to an 11-3 lead with 1:45 left in the first quarter following back-to-back three-pointers from Luke Reiner. With the Colts missing six of their first seven shots from the floor, Patton shook up his lineup and brought Kubishin in off the bench.Kubishin made the first trey in the closing seconds of the opening quarter, which ignited the Colts on a 12-2 run. Two Matt Karnish triples gave Marian a 17-15 lead and a second Kubishin three-pointer put Marian up 20-18 at halftime."We play zone in practice, so when we play against him, we get to see him shoot the ball," added Patton about Kubishin, who came in averaging 6.4 points per game at the JV level. "We came out tonight and Ronny (Weatherly head coach Ron Cann) does what Ronny always does, which is throw something at you that forces you to adjust. After the first few minutes, we saw the opening on their defense was on the left wing, which is where Nick excels."People are going to look at the box score and wonder where this Kubishin kid came from, but we know who he is. He has a nice shot and he's played really well for us at the JV level. It wasn't an easy game to throw him into tonight, with it being a win or go home situation, but I'm absolutely thrilled with the way he stepped up for us."After Weatherly used an 8-2 run to start the third quarter and regained a four-point lead (26-22), Marian once against turned to Kubishin who drilled back-to-back three-pointers to propel the Colts on a 10-0 run to close out the quarter leading 32-26."It's an amazing feeling to come in and be able to help the team in any way possible," lauded Kubishin. "Tonight it just happened to be scoring and knocking down a few shots, but everyone on the team did their part, which is the reason we came out victorious."After the Wreckers closed the gap to within two points (32-30) with 6:20 left in regulation, Marian ended the game by outscoring Weatherly 12-2.Backing Kubishin was Marian's Mike Vercusky who scored 10 points and hauled in 10 rebounds. For Weatherly (3-16, 1-12), Luke Reiner led the way with 13 points, while older brother Josh Reiner added nine points and 12 rebounds."We didn't execute in the second half tonight, and credit has to go to Marian for taking us out of our offensive sets," explained Weatherly head coach Ronn Cann. "We were keying in on Ethan Kuczynski because he's the kid that beat us last time we played them. I thought we did a great job taking him out of the game (Kuczynski scored just one point). However, when you take one person out of the game, someone else needs to step up and Kubishin did that in a big way tonight."WEATHERLYColl 0-0-0-0, Kelly 2-0-0-5, L.
